Cage Mod...

OK, so I had an idea yesterday to give Alice her own play stand since Melody doesn't know how to share very well yet.

This is a work in progress...I plan to make one more level if it works out, and then I will use the Kool Aid trick and give it some cool colors.

That looks great! My Orrin has a dometop cage similar to Alice's, and I've never figured out how to add a playstand to it. I might have to give that a try...

You can dye the wood with kool aid packets and water or Rubbing Alcohol. Don't use the kool aid with sugar in it...and make sure they are 100% dry before letting your bird on them. I like to put them in the oven for 20 mins to 1/2 hour at 200° to dry them out.

I really don't like this technique. The main reason that while you are also coloring the wood, you are flavoring it. This can cause the bird to actually eat the wood, most of which can't be digested and can cause impaction.

However color is good. Just get some walmart food coloring, use just a splash of vinegar, and water. The vinegar will help prevent it from rubbing off. Then bake as recommended... depending on the size or whatever it usually takes me about 10-20 minutes.

Another idea you could try is get a good sized branch, as used here, then take a small stainless screw and a stainless fender washer (small hole large washer) and screw it into the dowel from inside the cage. I did that on mine, works great!

Love your "playtop" - very clever idea! Think I am going to steal it.
