Safe Wood beads

Hi all,
I'm getting into DIY, and I'm conflicted about what wooden beads to use. I see lots of colored beads that look like great fun, but I don't know if they are safe to use. Is there a way to know what coatings are ok and what are not? It's hard to tell at craft stores and online shops.

It is best to get plain wood beads and dye them yourself with food coloring. I don't have much luck with getting nice colors, but it is the safest way to go.

If you want colored beads but don't want to color them yourself, the best thing to do is buy them from bird specific places who use all natural coloring. Vita coloring is considered bird safe. You can buy it to color natural wood yourself.

I highly recommend California Bird Nerds, they have great toy making supplies and everything is bird safe.

They have a plethora of wood beads too.

Thanks for the link! Those prices look great!

It's even just about equivalent to what little raw wood shapes cost at craft stores. ^^
