Homemade ropes
For a long time I was unable to buy rope perches so I had a go at making my own. Here's how I did it. First find a whole bunch of daggy 100% cotton T-shirts, ones where the collar's wonky, the hems are distorted, stained...but the fabric is still OK. Cut the back and front panels, (if they have no plastic decals) take one, begin at the edge' cut strips about 1" around the panel, (in one piece, spiral like) do this many times....Once you have many yards of these strands, join them together, I use a reef knot. Find two fixed points(I have two picture hooks on opposite walls)hook the end on one with a looped piece of string, go back and forth with the fabric strips till you have a loose cord, pass a few round the multiple strands to help hold them together. Try to keep the same tension throughout, firm but not tight. When you've come to the end, tie a strip of fabric round the loops formed by the turns, tucking in the very last bit of the strands. Do the same at the other end. Make some more long strips, use these to either wind in a spiral fashion round the rope, or using two crisscross along the rope. I've done both ways both are OK.Then repeat the wrapping. You should now have a rope-ish thing. I put a cable tie through the loops at either end to attach it wherever I want to use it. I've used these in the cage, on a playtree, in the aviary (in summer) and in the bird room. They are easy to wash, cheap or free. The amount of fabric strips you use to make the cord will dictate how thick it becomes, winding the holding strips on tight will increase the firmness or rigidity of the rope.
