Are pony beads safe?

So I was really inspired by this post and made a bunch of toys for Bee with a huge bag of pony beads I picked up from Walmart. Today she managed to pry some off and was playing with them in her mouth and it was freaking me out because they fit perfectly in the lower half of her bill. Is it a legitimate fear that she could choke or get one stuck in/on her beak? Does anyone else use pony beads with their conure toys?

pony beads are okay... just keep an eye on the bird if you can.... I have toys with those too and asked this question a few months ago... I was told that those are fine... but don't give anything smaller.

:)

I give pony beads to birds of all sizes. I've been reassured by people from a very large aviary that they have been giving them to their birds for years without any problems. I use both the big and the small pony beads. The birds love to snap the small beads. Once a macaw snapped some so hard they flew 12-14 feet. The beads hit me in the head. lol

There are some pony beads that are coated to give them an gasoline like, oily look, and there are ones that are painted with a cheap metallic finish. They probably wouldn't be safe like the regular ones. I have often wondered about the glow in the dark ones... that would be cool, but I can't say they would be safe either.

I have been using pony beads with all my birds for a while now with no problems. There are some that are bad for them though. Really shiny ones, painted wood types, glow in the dark ones and the kind that have sprinkled glitter in them. Always try to get beads made in the USA not the made in China kind.

The bag I got from Walmart was unquestionably from China (are there really some made in the US?) ... I don't think I know what you mean by "gasoline/slick" and "really shiny" ... these appear to be the normal pony beads I used to play with as a kid. Regardless, I'm just going to keep a close eye on her as she plays. I think I forget that birds aren't outright dumb... whereas anything my dog is chewing on she WILL swallow. Dogs... -_-

I use pony beads with Shakti and like you it really freaks me out when she cracks them.
I end up trying to get her to give me the piece.
