Converting Rabbit Cage to Bird Cage

I have a rabbit cage in my garage and I have no plans of getting another rabbit in the near future so I want to set this up for Lexi (Ekkie) to use. She needs width, not height, as i am scared of her falling off things.

This is a similar cage to the one i have, mine is bigger than this though!

I want to put a grate in it, as she poo's a LOT and i don't want her walking in it. What would you use. i need something easy to clean and hopefully removable.

I was thinking about getting some thick aviary wire cut to size and then put some 'legs' on it to raise it off the bottom. it's still perfect to hang toys on and her perches will work perfectly as well.

Does anyone have any better ideas? Or any reasons why this won't work?

I can't find cages anywhere that are wide enough without being too tall. The ones i can find are designed for small birds and she would chew through the wire.

Have you thought about using a metal dog crate? They make them with grates for puppies.

Those aluminum kings cages would also work:

Beautiful cages, but i'm not gonna pay retail price when i get such a good discount at my shop. unfortunately, out of all the ones we have to choose from, none are suitable. I don't even think we can get King's cages in Australia? If we did i'm guessing they would be super expensive. The cheapo chinese ones we usually have are awful and already pricy! I've looked on ebay and trading post and not found anything either..

I hadn't thought about a dog crate. i have them at work, but the two brands we stock don't have grates on the bottom.

I can cut the aviary wire easily with tin snips and put a dollop of silicone on the ends to stop them being sharp, i could have it slightly wider than the base of the cage and BEND it down for the legs...

I don't know the options. I think i'll take some photos of it and ambush some people at bunnings for help!!!

i think that cage will be fine. no sense buying a cage when you already have one. before i saw the picture, i thought you meant one of those old galvanized cages. if that is powder coat, rather than paint, it will be fine.

Yeah, it's powder coated. The wire i'm putting in the bottom is galvanised though. i'm going to cut it to size today and then scrub the heck out of it with vinegar and leave outside for a week or so before i set it up for her. It's gonna be so much better than the one she's already in. It's not TINY, but she def needs more floor space.
