A new friend, possibly?
I have made the decision, after doing much research, that an Eclectus would be the perfect member to add to my flock! So, through The Land Of Vos website, I met a woman who lives in the town next to mine who actually breeds them and she has one female hen left! So on Thursday, I am going to meet her and the Ekkie hen! I am so excited! If I like her, which I think I will (how could I not, right?) then I am going to put a deposit on her on Thursday and the breeder is going to keep her until she is fully weaned, of course, and maybe a little longer for me so I can make sure that I have the time to get all that she will need! So I may go to a bird show today and a couple in the next couple of weeks to check out cages and toys. I cannot wait to meet this little girl! I will keep you all posted as to how things go!
BTW, does anyone know of any good websites that have good prices on cages? What kinds of cages do your ekkies reside in? What are some of their favorite toys? What are their favorite fruits and vegetables? Thanks for the info in advance! |

sorry for the delayed response.
Scarlett is in a smallish cage at this point in time. My boyfriend measured it and it was something like 2x2x3. I think. It came with her from the rescue. We are saving up for a larger cage for her. She loves toys that she can destroy like pinatas (that DON'T look like an animal!), rawhide discs, wood, etc. I bought her a $7 toy from PetSmart a few weeks ago by Jungle Toy (or something) that was basically coconut cookies stacked among walnuts, almonds, etc on a metal wire. She demolished all of the cookies and is still trying with the walnuts. That is just her, though. I've read many posts about ekkies loving puzzles but she ignores those types of toys, at least that I can tell. As for foods--my girl is a pig. She'll eat anything thus far. I've fed her, in no particular order: kale, spinach, lettuce, escarole, dandelion greens, collard greens, celery, carrots, peppers, jalepenos, sweet potatoes, potatoes, tomatoes (cherry and regular), cucumber, yellow squash, zucchini, corn, red cabbage, garlic slices, strawberries, apples, banana, cherries, blueberries, aloe leaves, grapes, peaches, plums, mangoes, pineapple, papaya, oatmeal, pasta, rice, cooked bean mix, sprouted beans, canned salmon, raisins, pine nuts, cottage cheese, vanilla yogurt, hardboiled egg (with shell)--and that's just off the top of my head! Plus dry mix, nutriberries (rarely) and Nutri-Nuts (rarely). I don't think I've found ANY food she won't eat! Her favorites are corn, blueberries, cucumbers, and grapes. Feeding them is not a problem! |

Thanks for the input! I don't know if you noticed in the other thread, but Miss Scarlett has joined us in our home as of August 28th! I was lucky enough to find a great deal on a larger cage (36" x 24" x 65") and plenty of toys and perches at the bird show so she came home Sunday August 28th!
She was eating fresh fruits and veggies until I got some info from Outlaw about a bean/rice mixture that includes collard greens, frozen mixed veggies, frozen broccoli, and a fruit of your choice that can made in bulk and frozen to last longer. I made that and I add fresh veggies and some fresh fruit also daily and she LOVES it!!!!!! She has already had two showers and seems to like them alot! She is kind of a sassy girl, like me I must say, but still, very sweet and adorable! She has been testing her limits a bit with her beak but we are working on it and she isn't doing it aggressively or hard yet so we are working on it now so that hopefully won't ever happen. All in all, things are going very well! We enjoy having her in our family and my cockatiel, Stella, like "talking" to her as well! I hope your Scarlet is also doing well! Thanks again for the info! |

I bought both my cages second hand (my rosebreasted 'too used to reside in one of them). They are plenty big enough - check out my website for the pics.
skye eats anything, apples, pears, corn, peas, sprouts (home made - yes I finally started to make my own) a bean and rice/pasta mix that I cook up. She loves brown rice and spagetti and lasagne. She loves mashed potatoe with sweetpotatoe, popcorn (fresh made with no butter, salt or sugar), toast with vegemite or peanut butter, sweet peas, pumpkin, fried rice (home made) oh and she loves pizza. The list could go on and on. I grow some of my own veges and she gets them as well. At the moment there is silver beet and chillies (she loves chillies). ![]()
