Yes, the green guys are ALL males and the red ones are ALL females. You are absolutely correct. That's not a dumb question, just something that you didn't yet know.

Don't worry i thought the reds were a different species before i read up on them. At least you got the right species.

Very early on, before much was known about them that was a common misperception. However, there's still so much more to be learnt.

I love this one!!! The answer almost makes me seem like I know what I am talking about!!!

The Eclectus is one of the most sexually dimorphic of the Parrots!! That just sounds cool doesn't it? Sexually dimorphic. And all it means is the boys n girls don't look the same.

When I read that the first time it was a "I gotta remember that!!" kind of thing.

It's not a dumb question...

Back in the early stages of breeding them, the "EXPERTS" thought that the red ones were one species and the green ones were another. Can you image their faces when they discovered the truth after years of putting females with females and males with males to breed!

I can see it now, the thought process had to be:
"Oh, that is why they are so hard to breed in captivity!"

the only dumb question is the one that you never asked!!

yes, all males are green and all hens are red/blue :) but, there are strange things happening in a few birds, some ekkies have very unique coloring....and there is a blue mutation male ekkie, and ive seen a blue and white mutation female ekkie too...here are some pics that are very interesting :) i love the blue male!!

Eclectus

i cant find the page that had female ekkies with large patches of green on them
