Forumula coming out his mouth while asleep

There is a little forumula coming out his mouth. I have seen it two times. He is 4 1/2 weeks and on 4 times a day at about 22 grams. I know these birds are hard to feed, but he has been easy until today. He has taken only about 18 grams at each feeding so far. He seems scared of the enviorment and seems to want to hide instead of eating. I am trying to keep him very shielded when feeding, but he seems to see everything in the room and duck.

But, this forumula, just a bit of liquid in his mouth, is this normal?

May I ask why you are handfeeding this baby? Have you done others in the past? Did you breed this one? I'm curious as to why you would have such a young baby so far from weaning?

I have submitted your post to Carolyn Swicegood for her expert opinion.

He was a gift. Experience: only one time before, but not an ekke.

I am sorry, I just get nervous.

1st make sure your bird is warm, it is very very important that your bird stays warm and dry. Make sure you're changing his bedding and making sure he isnt sitting on his droppings.

What are you feeding him and how? Are you using a syringe or a spoon?

Has the bird been to the vet yet?

I know this is an expert thread but I want to recommend you see an avian vet as soon as possible Not to scare you on a saturday night, but what your describing with the behavior "can" be a symptom of crop burn. Sorry to say that but please have him seen.

It sounds like sour crop infection which causes regurgitation. Is the bird doing this every day or is it on occasion?

I am feeding him at 6-11-4-8 and has been taking about 22cc's each time until today where the feeding has been a little harder. (not too interested in eating and have to really work to get him to take it) I make sure that his crop is empty before feeding again. The temp of the formula is 103-104 (tested with digital thermometer) he weighed about 280grams this morning. He has been steadily gaining weight and his poop looks fine. His bedding is changed at each feeding and the temp in his area is between 80-85.
I just havent until today notice just a few drops of formula on the paper towels. I just want to make sure he is okay.

Hi, because of the feedings going rather smooth so far, and things changed quickly, I also suggest a board certified avain vet. Just to make sure all is ok.
Its good to see you checking temps, and he had a healthy appetite. I think he is too young to be playing with his food, so I would think there is a reason behind it.

okay
He just gave out a loud yell.. good to my ears.
Thanks all of you.
I don't guess it is good to wrap him in a towel and cuddle him a lot, huh? I sure will be glad for feathers all over him.

Stace.... I have handfed many Ekkies in my time, all the way until weaned. I have never lost one yet........IME, yes they are more difficult (as a general rule) to feed than say a Congo Grey or etc..... I just recently finished weaning a S.I. male. He is sweet, as all my other babies have been when they left me.

Btw, feeding amounts are usually stated in cc's or ml's, not grams. Ya do need to get the proper amount of food into him at each feeding while increasing the amount very slowly over time - for proper growth and development. I do that with a gavage instrument (not at all suggested for the inexperienced though - especially with Ekkies) and all my babies wind up tame, just as if they were handfed with a spoon etc. (IME)...... My clients are always happy with my "fids" - unless of course I once again make the mistake of selling them to folks not experienced enough (IMO) to deal with the proper handling/training/time/etc. that it usually takes before they come out of their flighty stage, like I once did. I will not do that again.

If ya run into continued difficulty feeding, as it sounds like ya may have (best not to wait any longer though), I may be able to help ya if ya like. I am in South Fla. (around Miami) and I see you are in Central Florida........ If you have faith in my handfeeding abilities (ask Joanie maybe), I would be willing to feed it out for ya.... Pm me for details please. Since it was a gift to ya, the charge to handfeed it might be well worth consideration.

I do suggest that you have it checked out first by a certified A.V. as I do not want to be falsely accused of any wrong-doing should you decide to bring it to me with an existing problem that hasn't fully showed itself yet.....
