What do you guys think??

I am not sure if all of you have seen the thread about my ekkie having surgery, but heres the deal, in a short version.

My ekkie just had surgery to repair a broken leg, he broke it from falling off a perch and we are guessing it was the way he landed. Anyway, his cage is very big - it is not only wide, but also very tall. Here is a link to his cage -

Kingscages Online Shop (powered by Kings Cages)

I am trying to everything to make him as safe as possible. He enjoys spending his time up high - his perches were nice and low to begin with, but he would still just hang out up top on the cage bars. I am thinking about getting him a different cage that isn't so tall. That way, if he does fall again, it will not be such a big fall. Do you guys think that is a good idea or should I leave him in his current cage?

If I do get him a cage that isn't so tall, it would have to be as smaller cage altogether, which I think would be fine for him. His current cage is 36 wide and all the cages that are the wide seem to have the same height, so I will have to go down to a 32 wide cage in order for it to be less tall.

I spoke with another member on here who thinks that down sizing to a smaller cage wouldn't be a big deal for him.

I wanted to see what other peoples opinions are - I think it would be a good idea to prevent any future injuries, but then again I am a new ekkie owner.

What do you guys think?

It probably won't be a big deal to get a smaller cage. You also have to consider that after his injury, and him having to spend the next month or so on the BOTTOM of his cage when he's in it, especially during such an important developmental stage in his life, he may actually end up being a bottom-cage-dweller.

My Scarlett hangs out on the bottom of the cage for most of the day. We used to have a special needs CAG who couldn't perch, and their cages were next to each other. The CAG came first, so when Scarlett came around, well, she thought it was "normal" to hang out at the bottom of the cage when she wasn't sleeping or eating. Now that she's older and the CAG is gone, she will hang out on the boing and on her cement perch, but when she's playing, she's at the bottom of the cage.

Just something to keep in mind. Let me know if he does end up a bottom-cage-dweller. . . I'll let you know what Scarlett uses for toys.
