homeless guy i met lives with his bird in the van, i want to kno how i can help

i was going to the supermarket and i saw a man with a male eclectus on his shoulder, he was living in his VAN which was parked in the nearby parking lot. he was seperated from his wife, couldnt find an affortable place to live and all he took was his bird, Sunny and his van. the bird was so nice and friendly, and right now hes just making some $ by letting people take pics with the bird and has a whole cage setup in his van. i could tell he really loved the bird, so i checked my sidekick and i found out the these birds need lots of fruits, so i went in the market and bought a whole bunch of fresh fruits and i gave it to him and he was so happy, like verge of tears, and at the sight of the mango the bird starting bobbing up and down. he was talking about how all the cheap places to live dont allow Sunny so until he finds a place, its his van and he refuses to give sunny up because sunny is his best friend.
im gonna go visit him 2morrow and see how him and sunny are doing
i wish i could do more to help, any suggestions?

Such a sad situation. Although living in a van isn't a great place for the bird, it's nice to see that he's THAT attached to the bird... I'm sure they need each other right now. Although I'm not in his situation I do know how much comfort a bird can give you... and they know exactly when to give you it.

So good of you to help out however you can though and the man showed you that it's the little things that count... who'd have thought a person giving him a mango would make him tear up. I hope you can continue to help him by giving the bird fruit and veg and taking the time out to chat to him, but only if you have the time and money to help feed another bird.

I hope he gets back on his feet again soon.

What a story, so sad yet so wonderful to see that the only thing this poor guy cared about when exiting his marriage was his beloved bird. Thats love. What a lucky bird, to have such a devoted owner. If I were you just drop by when you can to see if he needs anything for his fid (especially fresh water)... if hes not willing to re-home his bird that seems to be all you can really do. I think you are pretty wonderful for doing what you have. What a bittersweet story, thanks for sharing it with us. Please keep us posted.

Aaww, that is such a sad/sweet story. Bless you for helping him out. I'd do the same thing if I was in your shoes. Buying a few fruits a week for the guys bird certainly isn't going to put a big dent in your food bill and he will appreciate it. I bet what money he does make goes to his bird first.

Thanks for doing what your doing. There are a lot of places that will allow pets
it's only one bird/parrot.In your area do they have the booklets that you can help pick up and give to him so he can find a petfriendly apartment. There is also online searches too if you have the time. There is actually more help out there than you think.Check the colleges and grocery stores as well as the free newspaper ads.I wish you and Sunny and his little friend well.God Bless you all.Keep us informed please?

I had t stop by and read this sad story. I too own a SI male Eclectus and that would be me if it wasn't that I already live alone in a Condo. There are lots of owners of Condos out there and pretty cheap. Most in the By laws read that Birds are alowed, sometimes as many as 2 per unit. Most supermarkets have Apartment and Condo rentals, Perhaps, to resolve this issue would be as easy as giving the man a rental booklet. Are there bird clubs near you or do you belong to one, that might put his bird up for a while, until the man can find a place to stay. Just a thought. Keep up the great work and keep us posted. Thanks JJones1719

I would just keep doing what you are doing. I'm sure that all the money he get's for his photo's goes into getting himself a sandwich and the rest food for his bird. Such a sad situation. I hope a cash windfall comes his way and he and Sunny find a place to call home. Bless you for caring and taking food to his Eclectus.

I would have done the same thing. You know; do unto others ... karma.

Is this gentleman able to work? If so that could help him in many ways to find him employment so he can afford a place to live.

I don't know if your social services in America is very different from ours in the UK, but here with him being a single male with no children and under a certain age... there isn't that much help out there for him. Also him being able to work wouldn't necessarily help... need an address to work and to be working to secure an address.

I really do feel bad for him, it seems like he's just been struck with a bad situation rather than being a genuine bum.
