help w/pellet selection
I have a 9mo old male SI eclectus and I'd like to hear from people who have really researched pellets. My main concern is quality and not necessarily price.
Specific brand name and possible why you choose it, would be great. Thx. Brad |

I can't help you with Ekkie specific brand but do know they need a very special diet. Someone should be along shortly to give you better details then I can.

Generally speaking, as it seems, eclectus do not do well on pellets, due to their unique digestive system. Pellets can cause toe tapping and wing flipping (among a variety of other foods).
Pretty Bird *DOES* make an eclectus pellet from my understand, however personally I do not care for the Pretty Bird company.... I think it's crap... If you are to use a pellet, then I'd suggest Totally Organics, Foundation Formula (original formula), Roudybush (particularly the rice diet), or Harrison's... these particular pellets are probably the healthiest for our fids, and considering how sensitive eclectus can be to what's in their food, I would have to suggest those brands... although personally, IMO, if you are to feed pellets they should not take up any more than 25% of the diet, so as to hopefully not overbalance their nutrient intake...

I agree 100% with Monica - an ekkies diet should not be based on pellets, but can be given. I have known some ekkies that do perfectly fine on pellets while others are sensitive to them.
I feed pellets, but in small amounts - not like my grey who gets all the pellets he wants. My ekkie gets mostly fruits, veggies, and cooked food with limited pellets. This was how I did things when I had my male ekkie, but I havent had an ekkie in over 6 months - I have another ekkie coming home in a week and will do the same thing as before unless she shows me she has other needs. As for pellets I feed Roudybush.

We will NOT be feeding our Ekkie pellets. Almost every breeder we spoke with before finding our Pickles were against pellets- even organic ones.
Rather we will be feeding Bird-e-licious's Eclectus mix, which is NOT pellets, but is a convient mix form, with of course as much fresh as we can get down him every day. Here's the link to the food we buy: ECLECTUS Hope this helps- if you have more questions please feel free to ask! :)

I give my boy bird-elicious the ekkie specific one, though its not really pellets.... its hard to explain but my boy loves the stuff and its healthy for him
I dont really feed him it as a staple in his diet but as snackage during the day when I'm gone along with: kashi 7 grain cereal puffs raw live granola (which is just sprouted buckwheat groats and sprouted flax seeds) and multi-grain sprouted bread everything but the bird-elicious is from Henry's ECLECTUS |
