Quiet Ekkie

My 3 year old red sided ekkie Scarlett, does not say a word, she is very quiet she will wolf whistle and do little sighes during the day, but that is all (only wolf whistled 2 or 3 times since we had her)

Will this change as she settles in as we have only had her for 2 weeks on Friday. I just can't believe how quiet she is. She will also only interact with anyone if they have food. Other than that she will sit on her perch flapping and preening.

Well 2 weeks isn't that long.Right now she is observing. Now as far as interacting when she sees food that's normal Eclectus live for food. If your waiting for Scarlet to talk she just may be a closet talker. Out of my 7 Eclectus most of them are closet talkers. They make their occacational noises but waiting for words only happens when I'm in another room. If she does talk
with you in the room it will be in her timing.Enjoy her while you can.

It's not the talking that is the problem I know some Ekkies just choose not to talk at all, its the fact she doesn't make any sound, she doesn't even have a noisy time even when people are out the room. I may sound mad wanting a noisy bird I suppose I should count my blessings that she isn't a screamer.

No you don't sound mad because she's not making noise.I do understand what you are saying.Mine that I had as babies were quiet in the beginning too some do talk or make Eclectus noise and then there are the few that no matter what make no noise whether talking or normal Eclectus noise.I can't say for sure whether the quiet ones actually say or make noise when I'm not in the room.I think with your Scarlet only time will tell.I wish you well.

Thank you for your reply, well she had a lovely play around with her toys today which is a first and I think she actually said Hello but it was very quiet.
She has taken a big shine to my husband, wherever he sits she will follow, but he isn't a big lover of birds and is hoping she will warm more towards me in the future ( she came from a home with only males living there )

Well that will explain her desire to go to your husband. My husband wasn't much of a bird person either but the birds are helping to make him one.
He has really started to fall for all the Eclectus and a few of the others.I figure that's a start. We belong to another forum together since we have Eclectus but I have been having trouble getting on hopefully one day I will get
it situated.

My female coo's and makes littel noises but my male talks up a storm.
I think it depends on the birds.

Well things have changed again, any time I go near Scarlet she will growl at me and run away or fly away which ever is the easiest thing for her to do. I have been trying for over a week now to get her to step up onto a peice of dowel with no luck. My husband isn't happy that she doesn't want anything to do with me lol, as she was bought as a companion for me as he is away alot.
I am a little upset as I read all your wonderful stories and how they love being with you, yet she doesn't want to interact with anyone and would rather sit in her cage all day.

Not everybody here has a happy story.I may have 7 Eclectus but they all are not success stories. My Scarlett is a Vos and I handfed her since she was 1 month old.She is now 2 years old and she wants nothing to do with
me or my husband. We are her only caregivers and she would rather spend her time hanging out on her cage or with the other birds. You are not alone and don't take it personal.Sometimes that's just the way they are.I do what I have to do and go on from there.Sometimes it's not easy considering what we have been through together.I know exactly what you are going through because it's been almost 2 years with Scarlett.

It must be a Scarlet thing, I'm not going to give up on her. I spoke to the last owners who told me when I went to see her that she was very tame and loved being with people, but when I spoke to them in an email yesterday they said that they had only had her for a few weeks and had got her for breeding only but she didn't get on with the male. Funny how they change their story. That she wasn't very tame in the first place.

Do you think it is worth me trying to tame her or just let her get on with things as she is now??
