eclectus compatibility
Hello,
I own an 1-year-old female SI Eclectus, and she's the sweetest bird I've ever seen. Here is my dilemma. She's been talking a lot to the mirror image of herself lately, and being a student myself, I'm usually not home until late afternoon, but I spend lots of quality time with her in the evening. I've been thinking about getting a companion bird for her so that she can socialize not with an imaginary friend, but a living one and I don't know what parrot species would be compatible with a female Eclectus. Since I already go to great lengths to feed her the best food and all, adding another bird won't be too much work for me. I want to have them in separate cages, but there is a possibility that I might keep them together in the same cage eventually, and I know this means I'll have to size up my cage by a lot. Any suggestions? thanks! |

I have been keeping Eclectus for 13 years and am now owned by 7 Eclectus. For the last 3+ years they have been companion to some of my Greys and my Yellow Nape Amazon.Though they are not housed together but there haven't been any problems either. If you did decide to try this I would advise you to closely supervise as all birds are different. Now as far as putting them in the same cage I would be strongly against it.You could always purchase a Double Macaw Cage or something similar where they would have their space and would not be a threat to each other.I wish you well.

Hello, I have a 2 year old SI Male Eclectus named Guapo, in the wild, females stay with female eclectus. males are only in the picture at breeding times. If you end up putting your female with another bird, remember that they may bond with eachother and not you or want anything to do with you. Keeping the Eclectus is seperate cages is always better, you don't want to loose the bond that you have. Bringing in another bird doesn't not mean that they will get a long either, you may inviting in a bad relationship with your feathered friend. if all goes well, and it can, I would join a bird club to see how she gets along with others first and then go from there. many bird clubs charge $20.00 for the entire year, so even if things don't work out, you are only out $20.00 instead of hundereds. I take my Guapo to every bird club meeting and he just loves it. He goes to everyone and now I too am getting another Bird, A Green winged macaw. i will never let them play together due to their size but after their quarrantined, I wil have their cages close enough together to keep eachother company. but when i come home from work, It will be me and each bird one on one to keep that strong bond. Good Luck in whatever your deside to do and keep us posted on what you deside. love to see pictures. Thanks JJones1719

I've seen several eclectus and amazons who become friends. My amazon and eclectus are buddies but I would Never put them in a cage together. My eclectus gets very territorial if another bird enters his cage or whatever cage he has climbed in at the time. They were in the same house for over a year before they decided they even liked each other. Now they play, feed each other, call to one another, and fly through the house together. And boy do they get into trouble together. They aren't as close to me as they were before they became friends especially my eclectus. In a way it's good because he was too bonded to me but I do miss some of the affection.

Having 2 birds means you have to be ok with having 2 onlys, just like having kids, my Mom had all 3 of hers 7 years apart and we have almost nothing to do with each other.
Will you be ok if the 2 birds dont get along? You may want to when you find a bird you like take your female along to meet it? I would really only add another bird if you want another bird jjones Im not so sure about that, this person infact has 2 beautiful pairs of ekkies that all get along landofvos.com :: View topic - April, Iwan, Franka and Frodo pictures |

Thanks everybody for sharing your views! After careful consideration, I have decided not to add another bird because of the potentially aggressive nature of female ekkies and many other issues you brought up. I guess I'll just invest in tons of toys to keep her busy and even more quality time with her.

Loyal, I was just stating the facts, not all birds get along. I belong to the Baltimore bird famciers club of maryland where Myself and other members bring their birds.Normally there are approx 50 birds in 1 room. some get along but many ( Do Not ), It is alway possible for birds when they are young and grow up together, they become great friends but sometimes the bond you have with them may not be the same when they start to bond with eachother. Every bird or birds are different and have their own personalities. it is really up the birds and how they get along with their owner and eachother. The Best thing to do is keep them in seperate cages. letting them play outside the cage is fine, if they get along. from reading everyone's notes and advise, I believe we are all stating the same thing here. best of luck JJones1719

Layal, just to state a fact, if you look close, the link you attached shows each bird in their seperate cages. none of them are together. Thanks JJones1719
