?? about Eclectus Sub-species

I have some questions about the various subspecies of Eclectus. I found a couple of websites that briefly explain the physical differences between the 7-10 subsets (depending on which your read), mainly that the Solomon Islands are smaller and the female Vos are more lilac purple in spots than blue.

I'm wondering if there are any character differences between them? Why one subspecies would be preferred over the other? Is there any difference in temperament, talking ability, etc.?

Also, what subspecies are preferred by people on here? We're seriously considering buying a pair of babies next summer, so I'm trying to find out all I can.

Thanks,
Tina

oh, we had that discussion a little while ago on land of vos
landofvos.com :: View topic - Help Deciding on subspecies (ASAP), I am LOST!!!!

Essentially the only difference is the size and the color of the females.

I went for a red-sided male since they are about mid-size and it was my first bird. Eventually though I would like a large vos girl since I find their coloring stunning.

Essentially thats the difference that ive found. There is a bigger difference in the boys and the girls rather than the sub-species.

You'll find a variety of answers on that topic, all based on personal preference. If Marcia were still here, she could give you such a great answer as she had I think 10 or so rescue ekkies of different subspecies.

I have heard that the female vos is the most aggressive and that the SI male is the sweetest. Then, I've heard that the Vos are the sweetest subspecies, and the Redsided is the most aggressive. And that SI females are the meanest. But they're also the sweetest. . . . it's really going to get you nowhere.

My female Vosmaeri is a sweetheart. She's 12, so well past the "terrible 2s" or puberty. When she gets hormonal, she is only nippy while on the ground, and for the most part, she's just anti social. I have a bird-loving friend who owns an exotic bird store, and she says that all female Vosmaeris that she has met were total witches. Except for mine. I personally believe the difference is socialization. Of course you will always have to take into account the individual personality of the bird (sometimes you can socialize like a champ and still end up with a nippy bird on your hands!).

The best thing? If you're not set on a specific subspecies, go to a breeder that has several, and let a baby pick you.

And I always recommend rehoming or rescuing, but if you can find an ekkie for rehome or rescue, let me know. I'll fight you for him/her
