Some good news, some bad news, and where I've been

As I've not been here long, you probably didn't know I was gone, but 2 weeks ago I was in a bad accident....run off the road by a semi, flipped, then rear ended as I was trying to get out. I was in the ICU in a coma for several days. Oddly, I wasn't really injured other than the head injury, and lots of bumps and bruises, but because of the head injury docs were not sure I'd make it....but I'm stubborn. I've been out of the hospital now for about a week. I'm no worse for the wear but still a bit sore and get headaches a lot.

Anyway, in the meantime, some of you may recall that we had a deposit on a baby female red sided ekkie. Unfortunately, right before the accident, we found out that she had a leg injury, and then someone at the bird shop told my husband that the bird had her leg amputated and that she was at the vets and not expected to make it. Not sure where all that came from, as she does have a leg injury and it will never be normal, but she is back at the pet shop. I had called my vet (which is also their vet at the shop) and he advised me that I probably should not get the bird afterall. While I was in the hospital, Mark got our deposit back. In the meantime, a friend from another forum heard what had happened with me and with the baby ekkie, so she found one for me on Craigslist, called and set the whole thing up so the day I got out of the hospital, off we went to get our new baby. (well, actually she is 2)

Her name was Delilah, which was fine, but we were calling her Ruby so often as that was what our other bird's name was to be, we decided to change it. So....now meet Miss Ruby, our newest addition!

I'm so glad this all worked out as it has, because this poor girl really needed a new home. When we first spoke with the woman, she'd said she was rehoming all her birds as her daugher had been injured in a bad accident and she is currently pregnant with her 4th child and did not have the time to spend with the birds. Ok, understandable.....but poor Ruby did not even know how to step up, and we were told had not been out of her cage in about 6 months. Then the last thing the woman said to me as we were leaving was "After I have the baby, I'm going to get four more birds". HUH???? Grrrrrr I was mad!

We have already made lots of progress with her, though she is still a bit jumpy. She now will step up out of her cage, and I can get her off the top with a dowel. I can get her from the top on my hand if she's not on the very top, but usually have to use the dowel as the cage is taller than I am. We were told she didn't like to be scritched, but that's not true...said she wouldn't cuddle...not true either. She just had never been worked with. They saw her in a pet shop and the woman said "I don't know what that bird is but she is pretty and I want her", and did no research on ekkies, or what they are like.

Ruby is a beauty!!! Not much can compare to the looks of a female eclectus. I'm happy you found each other. I'm glad you were not more seriously injured. What an eventful couple of weeks!

I don't really agree with changing names. Birds know their names, they name each other. What about the poor bird with the leg amputated? Doesn't anyone care what happens to her?
