Finding a reputable breeder

I'm not asking to discuss baby vs rehome. I am just wanting to know, how do you find a local, reputable breeder? I have found a place on birdbreeders.com that is local and has great raves and reviews-but that's all I have to go on. I'm thinking about contacting the local avaian vet to ask. We have a local parrot society too but their website is bare. We are located in Iowa and I have found tons of african grey breeders :p but so far its been slim picking for eclectus. What do you suggest?

Ask the breeder for their avian vet's number. Call that vet for a reference. I've gotten great references from prior clients/customers for breeders who turned out not to have the bird's best interest at heart or made sure the bird was healthy. I cannot stress enough how important a good reference from an avian vet is. The breeder shouldn't have a problem giving you the name and telephone number of his/her vet. If the breeder doesn't want to give you the name/number, run quickly in the other direction. Do not just accept that the breeder must be good because they do give you a name of a vet. Call the vet and ask questions. Good luck! Ekkies are great birds.
