Who can tell me about the female Eccie as a pet vs the male Eccie as a pet?
I have a male and he is just fantastic and I am in need of info of keeping a pair in separate cages as companion parrots. Be it two males, or a male and a female, I think I'm after another birdie to join the flock. Obviously I'm after behaviour info on either of the above situations for flighted companion parrots in the house. From the landofvos site.... "Puberty and sexual maturity are more dramatic with the female than the male, who seems to change very little as he approaches sexual maturity.......They go through an aggressive stage as they mature sexually and become protective of the "nest area" which includes their cage as well as the nestbox. With consistent love and guidance from the owner, this stage passes and the female Eclectus remains a wonderfully loving companion to her human family" Is this even relevant to a companion parrot that roams the house? Will I find her making a home im my cuttlery drawer and find that I can't get her out!!!! ?? Comments welcome here. Should I really be afraid of the female Eccie reputation? Thanks, DF |

If you are like me, you will set up a nest box eventually. I found the nest box was so much better than chasing her out of dark hidey-holes or keeping her confined to her cage. Offering a nest box usually results in the female laying eggs, and as in our case with a pair, fertile eggs/chicks. And so the cycle begins. Many people claim their pair don't get along and therefore never mate. I don't know how that works exactly, but maybe it's because they are more interested in the owner than the other Eclectus. There are two very good Eclectus email lists that I can recommend. You might want to consider joining either or both of them for a while. Over the course of a couple weeks you will definitely hear from multiple bird owners with questions and interesting stories to share. The mailing list on LOV Land of Vos - The Eclectus Connection Mailing List has thousands of members, many with multiple birds in different configurations. Also, another very good list is Yahoo's EclectusPetOwnersGroup EclectusPetOwnersGroup : Eclectus Pet Owners Group has several hundred members including some breeders and Eclectus experts who generously share their years of experience. I believe either or both of these groups are a good place to get honest opinions and advice from other Eclectus owners. You will also get a feel for the "issues" that people with multiple birds experience. Kathy
