Male or Female

I was wondering if males or females make better pets with a home with other species of birds? I have read male but have also hear females? Which one do you recommend?
Thanks,
Mitzi

Interesting....since I have not sexed Harley I can't say much beside he is the one and only bird I have ever had! LOL!

I bet their could be something to this tho. I wonder what percentage of folks that can't tell by looking have had their birds sexed?

Only then we could maybe find out something definate on whether one sex is better than the other.

I think...

They are sexullay dimorphic. It is very easy to tell male or female.

We opted for a boy because most things you read suggest that they are more timid and the females are more assertive. I have seen several people on this board-and others, tell lots of stories of their females though, and they sound like wonderful pets too. I currently have a fairly timid bird, so I was aiming for something with the same type of temperment-however I realize too that we might have a bossy and pushy little boy on our hands-you just never know. :) The breeder tells me that he's quite demanding right now and he's only a few weeks old. I'm sure the experienced ekkie owners will have more insight for you.

the girls are prettier
boys are more submissive, girls are more dominant. Boys can have issues too though. Girls are supposed to be OK unless you let them get into dark corners where they get their nesting instinct in an uproar. Then they go into protect mode. I'm glad I have a girl, she's just a baby but very interactive, strong personality, very playful, cuddly. I was looking for a boy to start with but am glad I ended up with my girl. She very easy now though, just a baby, so I know I will have challenges later on, but with the right training and handling I don't anticipate it being anything I can't handle.

Well, I have a male and can only say from my experience that Sebastian is extremely loving to the new Sun Conure I have she's not even 2 months yet. She flew onto his cage yesterday, which he is always on top of, he sleeps up there too, and I thought he was going to freak out, but he didn't he just went over and was kissing her.

And I left them in a room alone yesterday perched by the window so I could clean their room and I would check every few minutes because I was nervous and when I went in she had sidled over to him and was leaning against him and they were looking out the window together.

I had 3 of each. I sold 4 to people around my area. I kept 2 for breeding. The ones I sold went with training information on tricks & talking, along with information on their species. I found the females in this bunch were more interested in tricks, but would talk for me as well. All were cuddly. All are exceptional eating machines. All were very nice birds.

well, my best answer is pretty much a smart alek response but I think it holds true here............

yes a male or female will make the best pet.

I love my Sophie to pieces and she is a wonderful companion.

I have both male and female. Of course they have very different personalities but who doesn’t! The only thing I can say that really differs between the two of mine is my female is much more attached to me then anyone else in the house, whereas my male always goes to everyone. If my female is having an off day, I am the only one she will let touch her (unless they have a grape in their hand, then she turns to putty no matter what mood she is in!) Good luck to you if you decide to get an ekkie! They are such a joy to have around.
