I took Nara into the bathroom for her shower. As usual, I set her down by the sink meanwhile I adjust the water temperature in the shower. This usually takes me about 1-2 minutes meanwhile the water stabilizes so I can make sure it won't get any hotter or colder after some time. I looked back at Nara, and she was quietly sitting there, moving her beak. I figured maybe she was just grinding her beak in excitement (she loves showers). So I turn back towards the shower and continue adjusting. A few seconds later I start thinking she's WAY too quiet. I look back and she's pecking at something by the sink, then chewing and swallowing. I knew there was nothing there because I had just cleaned the bathroom, so I thought she's just pecking at the dark spots in the tile which she usually does. But what's with the chewing? I turn the water off and walk towards her to get a closer look. She was eating ANTS! Apparently they're a delicacy to her because she won't even eat her treats like that... I am 100% sure that her diet is not lacking protein, so she was just eating them for the fun of it, or maybe they tasted good to her? Meh!

There'll be no kissing for a few days.

I'm rather fond of the idea of getting another conure. another Female. most likely a sun. do you guys think its a good idea?

im not really fixed on what kind of conure to get. is there any major differences between the different flavors of conure? i have plenty of time for anything i think!

(i already have 2 cages. in fact its the same exact kind my Maria already has. pictured below. i also get her out all the time and usually leave the cage open during the day. silly thing rarely leaves despite the freedom to.)
its a little bare of toys but im fixing that today. 2 ended up being thrown out. not that she ever noticed em! she has this obsession with bells.

Here's the scene. Bee and I are eating dinner. It's quiet in the kitchen. I'm flipping through TIME magazine. I turn the page and EXPLOSION OF FEATHERS AS BEE HIGH TAILS IT ACROSS THE ROOM! I retrieve her, wondering what's gotten into her, sit down and ACROSS THE ROOM AGAIN! I look down at the article on wooden bones and go, "Is this what's scaring you?" I do what I normally do when she's uninterested or nervous around something and mash my face all over it. "See, it's cool!" She's still CRAZY hesitant and won't go towards. I turn the page and she INSTANTLY calms down. Turn the page back, OMG RUN AWAY!

So without further ado... (please, cover your fids eyes)
The scariest thing my conure has ever witnessed. It's gotten to the point that even -I'm- starting to get freaked out by it, lol. It's funny because she's never been afraid of anything before. Leave it to a large, round illustration to finally get to her...

But just to prove everything is still honky dory around here...

He has even nailed one of the dogs on the nose a few times. The dogs fear him. But tonight, my 9-year-old got it from him. All of a sudden she is screaming and turning in circles and there is Jose attached to her neck. Granted, she was teasing him and got too close but he left a swollen bruise on her. I've been bitten a couple of times, mostly by Rosie, and nipped by Jose but not like that. I can't believe the bite area swelled up like that. What bite experiences has anyone else had, from a conure or otherwise?

ive looked for sites about Conure behaviour but only ever find info about their biting! never seems to be the more eccentric things ive noticed in my 1 year old green-cheek, Maria.

she seems to only trust me, and bites anyone else that tries to pick her up. she has no issue with me putting her on her back and petting her tummy and when i give her baths she tells me shes done by running to me and hopping on my knee. whenever shes on the floor, shell immediately run up next to me, or climb onto me.

what confuses me is, despite her obvious trust, lately when i go to take her out shell jump to the side of her cage and duck down as if fleeing. but then when i go to actually pick her up she doesn't struggle and lets go. and is then very happy perching in my hand or just laying back while i carry her. she started doing this at the same time she completely stopped nipping at me.

another behaviour that i find amusing is she "dances" for other people. never me. just other people. she'll go to a cage corner and swing her body up and down. (of course since i spend all day every day in my room, with her next to me, if she danced whenever i was around she'd never stop!)

as another amusing thing. she had her wings clipped for ages, but im letting her feathers grow back in because birds should be allowed to fly, in my opinion. yet every time she dares to fly, when she lands she always acts absolutely TERRIFIED! she scares herself with her own flying. XD sometimes shes spooked by a noise that makes her fly but usually she just does it to do it.

I now understand when people say a managed flight clip for a conure won't keep them from flying, because he has four flights on each wing and can fly! I can't keep him in one spot anymore, I think he really enjoys it though. So now he can't be out when we are cooking and I really have to pay attention to doors being opened and closed. It's exciting to watch him fly though, hes not very graceful right now, but hes working on it!! I can't wait until all his flights grow in, he will be even more gorgeous then he already is  Just thought I would share an update with everyone!!

Even if it is full, he still pulls it off the bars and throws it on the floor. It was higher up, but he moved it himself onto the back of the cage, so we left it on there. He now wants it on the floor. Put down some newspaper on the grill to stop all the food being wasted, but he just pulls up the newspaper and walks around his cage with it.

He's certainly not bored :icon_biggrin::001_tt2: any ideas??

I am fighting with Pedro. Yes, I do realize he is a bird, but I am mad at him anyway.
ALL i wanted to do when i came home today was take a nice hot shower ALONE and relax. The entire time he screamed from the other room, and while I was drying off, and dressing. He screamed until I came in the living room (where I ignored him but he shut up just seeing me) I let him out of his cage for being quiet, but now he just sits on his stand and randomly screams.
I am very good at ignoring him when he is yelling. I have to come in the room sometimes because my apartment is not terribly large, but I don't even look at him. He is getting to the point that if he is not on me, he is not happy. I don't know what to do, but I NEED SPACE!!! He has plenty of toys, just got him a couple new ones and made him one, he plays with them when I am gone. He also knows when I am gone gone, and doesn't scream. I know because I can hear him from outside when he does. He's too smart!

Hey all!

My Green Cheek conure, Kiwi is 6 years old. She is a feather chewer, so she looks a little rough. I have only had her a week and have changed several things including diet (more veggies over fruit, and a natural pellet as opposed to a fruit one) and avian lighting. I also have been giving her a bath at least every other day. I am not using any special bath products, just warm water.

I have noticed that she has a bad smell. My parrotlet smells quite lovely, where as Kiwi seems musty..... almost like a dish rag that one uses to wash dishes which needs a wash... She has a clean bill of health from an avian vet.

Is this smell normal, and if not what do you suggest I do in hopes of getting rid of this horrible smell. Could I use a mild baby shampoo diluted?

Hey all
My names Amy and I have a beautiful and cheeky green cheeked conure named Gaupo. I have had him since he was approx six mths old (I got him from a pet store but he was hand trained) he is now about 18 mnths old and has adjusted very well. When I first got him he would bite alot, but that conures for you! I live with my mum and he spend a lot of time with her or me during the day, has LOTS of attention, lots of snuggles and is basically spoilt.

I am moving out on my own soon and starting a full time job and since Gauppy is used to so much attention I was considering getting him a friend (probably the same breed) to be his companion, I don't like the thought of him sitting alone in his cage all day. He loves animal interaction, we have two cats and a dog here and he has no fear of them, riding on their backs or snuggling with the cat and chewing on his whiskers. We recently got a new (older) cat and he has dealt well with her introduction too.

I have read about how if i got him a friend i should start them in seperate cages and let them befriend each other slowly. Gaupo has a bite on him tho so i'm a bit worried. I would probably get a six month old one, would he be too aggressive for a baby? Any tips, has anyone else been through this?

I'm thinking about a green cheek conure, but am curious as to how they compare to parrotlets: I understand gcc's tend to be more nippy. How much more nippy are they compared to parrotlets, in general? Also, I've read that they are considerably quiet for being a conure, and suitable for apartments. How does their noise level compare to a parrotlet (normal chatter, as well as screams)? To a cockatiel? I have roommates who don't mind the parrotlet noise level, but are iffy on the idea of a larger parrot because of the screaming potential.
I am available for social interaction (planning on experimenting with clicker training) with the bird at least an hour a day, however many days I will be at work for no more than 8 hour shifts. Will a ggc be content in the cage for that long, assuming I offer a spacious and entertaining environment? We have a screened in patio with planted ficus trees where the bird will be able to roam WITH supervision (had my beloved parrotlet land in the pool 6 months back when left unattended- it was devastating), where the bird will be able to loudly vocalize without concern. However, I still want to avoid screaming issues indoors, so as to not annoy the roommates.
Thanks,
Scott
