Yikes! That's a scary amount, and just from one home? And we were getting worked up over the A&E hoarder episode, I bet that house was a nightmare!

Homes sought for 425 rescued birds | APP.com | Asbury Park Press
From today's Asbury Park Press:
TINTON FALLS — New homes are being sought for 425 birds rescued by animal welfare officials from a home in northern New Jersey.
The Associated Humane Societies has been caring for the birds since they were removed from a Belleville home in March.
They include canaries, parakeets, finches, parrots, cockatiels and conures. They will be given only to adoptive owners who can prove they are and able to care for them properly.
The Humane Societies also is seeking volunteers to help clean cages, feed and water the birds at its facility in Tinton Falls.

OMG! Thats horrible! 375 dead birds found in the refrigerator! Oh I wish I were in the area, I would volunteer all the time I could. Maybe I can contact and at least make a donation to help out. I'm just speechless at the moment......
I am scared to look at it. Just from what you guys have said I am already really upset.

What bothers me here is from the web site they are looking for organizations to take these birds off their hands rather than trying to find homes themselves. "The Society is now searching for bird sanctuaries who will give them the respect, care and space they didn't have before. Any bird sanctuaries can contact us or call Bruce Sanchez"
Sanctuaries are supposed to be a final and permanent home for the birds who enter. Why cannot homes be found for all these birds? Don't they deserve a chance to have a loving home rather than being placed in a sanctuary where there is no possibility of a home? Something is wrong, it just ain't right for all the little ones.
that is so sad,,im going to call to volunteer to clean the cages its the least i can do as i cant take none of them in

Locating homes for that many birds at a time is a big task. It is easier for the Humane Society if a sanctuary/rescue takes several birds at a time, rather than adopting out the birds one at a time to the public. Most Humane Societies do not deal with birds, just dogs & cats.

Some rescued are illegal in NJ. So thats where the rescues come in.
I've sent food donations up to them from my store. I also have a cage to send up.
I sponsor some birds up there year round with food and toys.

Renee, I understand completely where your heart is coming from but sometimes a private home is not always the best choice for a bird, though we would like to believe all parrots in captivity need human interaction and love.
Having a rescue, there are times when a bird is relinquished to you and all you have to do is feel the heart and emotions of the little one for him to tell you "please, just let me be with my kind, I don't want to be a companion bird anymore, I don't want to have to try, I don't want to hurt and be scared anymore, I just want to rest and be a bird."
Sometimes a good sanctuary where a bird can be part of a flock of his own kind and be free to fly and be wild again is the best gift of love and respect we can give our feathered friends.
It is a tremendous challenge to find one qualified home for a bird, hoping beyond hope that that home will be a "forever" home. Finding homes for that many birds in need that have been in such horrendous conditions would be a monumental endeavor indeed.
I do understand your heart though... completely!
I've been in contact with them again and I will be heading up there shortly to help evaluate and identify the species they have.
I will be bringing more food and the cage.
They have my store info to help place them and are working with out of state organizations for the illegal ones.
