Bios for rehomes

Since i got apollo i realized how little i know about his past life. I am his fourth home in his short 3 yr. life. I remember a while back when i had to rehome my fids i wrote out a biography of there whole life with me and passed it on to the new owners. I gave pictures of them as babys and growing up and told what there names were and why they were named. Example, My m2 was named squiggles because as a baby he got so excited when he saw food he squealed and wiggled all over so we combined both and came up with squiggles. I listed food likes, bedtime, weather we covered cage, what times they were apt to be noisey. I even listed what in my house they liked to destroy. I gave the good with the bad so they knew exactly what to expect. I wish other people who rehome birds would do the same thing. Each time the bird was passed to a new home it could be updated. All of us that have rehomes would have important information. Heck i didnt even know apollo was a she until she laid the egg. Wouldnt you all love to get a bio with your rehome? I did it for my birds and wish others would do it for theres. The guy i got apollo from only had her for a few months and knew nothing about her or her former life. Apollos former life is a big mystery and i sure wish i knew more about her. Shes a very friendly macaw so i think someone at some point in her life loved her. Oh i wish i knew.

I understand. Abbey didn't have a name. He said she was a year old but didn't know the dates. He said he bought her a year ago and the pet store told him she was a baby. Really reliable. When we got her all she had was seed in her cage an he said she liked grapes. Wow has her life changed. She didn't know how to step up or talk. Now she can say a sentence. I am not sure what he did with her for a year but it wasn't much.

Even if you get info from the previous owner, it's hard to know how accurate it is. It would be nice to know... but in some cases, I think it's better not to. All I need to know is that Ziva was kept in a small rabbit cage with no toys.. any more than that and I fear I'd have to hunt out the old owner and stuff him in a rabbit cage for 6 years in my garage.

I agree. All of my birds are re-homes and I would love to know more about their previous life. The one that I know the most about is my B&G.

As a youngster she was abandoned to a backyard in Florida by an angry ex-husband. The only way that she got food and water was from the neighborhood kids who came and fed her cheetos and god knows what else. Her cage was almost up to the bottom tray in mud by the time she was confiscated. She had been there almost a year, locked in her cage outside. She then lived with the people I got her from for many years. She was well loved, but she was in WAY to small of a cage with no toys. It is amazing she is even handleable considering her early life. She is a VERY sweet and loving bird...a diamond in the rough for sure.

I do wish that I knew more about my two other birds though... They have both had at least 3 homes before me though.

When I have rehomed birds, I included all of the information I had about them. Everything that I learned in my experience with them. For instance, I gave a finsch's conure to the mother of one of my mom's coworkers. (She wanted a bird. She missed the tiels she had years ago. He wanted to be an only child.) I wrote an 8 page detailed report of everything I knew about him. I included some of his favorite recipes, places I bought toys, his vet info, whatever I had. I wish I had gotten the same from his previous owners. I got very little info and all of what she said turned out to be untrue.
I have homes lined up for my birds if something bad happens to me. I'm working on paperwork to go with them. I had it before but lost it when my old computer died.

I've always given detailed histories of all the birds I placed, even the babies, who didn't have long histories but I'd include all the important dates and growing-up photos etc. I wanted their new people to know everything I knew about them... I think I got a little long-winded, at times!

Charlie had a real short history when I got him, he was only 8 mths old and his former owner had bought him from a pet store. His band is from TX but I've never tracked it down.

Petrie also didn't have much of a history, he was only a year old when I got him, his owner was something of a collector and she'd picked him up in a trade -- she didn't seem to remember (or didn't want to tell me?) the details.

The bird I really wish I knew more about was my mom's wild-caught CAG, Butters. I got him from a really awful breeder/hoarder in Ohio. She'd only had him a month or two and had gotten him from a woman who sold him, according to this breeder, because she had hemophilia and couldn't get near him for fear of being bitten. I can only assume he wasn't with that owner very long, either, so I probably only know about the previous few months of his life before I got him, which leaves many years I know absolutely nothing about. Oh well. At least I know with some certainly what his future will be like! He has really taken to my mom, but if something should happen to her, he'd come back to me or go to another family member... that bird will always be in our family.
