    Red Rumps?

Are they as mild mannered as other Grass keets? Can I put them in My Aviary with Grass keets and finches???

Red rumps are generally considered to be suitable for mixed aviaries. They are not as mild mannered as a Bourke's parrot (although I don't know if any parrot is as gentle as a Bourke's, lol) but I'm not sure where they sit on the grass keet aggression scale. Red rump owners can give you a better answer than I.

I have heard though that males shouldn't be kept together due to aggression (don't know if this is true), so I'm not sure...

As for mixing with finches, it will depend on your aviary and the personality of the red rumps (some are just plain bullies while others are fine). The aviary needs to be large and should have... not sure how to explain it... 'mini environments' so the birds don't need to be anywhere near each other if they don't want to. Also plenty of feeding stations. I have done this when mixing finches and parrots for 10 years and have never had a whisper of a problem. I have never kept red rumps though (but I do have turquoisines and budgies (both are the more aggressive grass keets), among others). Be sure to keep a close eye on them to make sure no one is being harrassed.

Plus 30+ cockatiels, turks, budgies, finches, doves, and quails. :)

I have a pair of Scarlet Chesteds in there, A Pair of Bourkes (not bonded), A Paradise Whydah cock, a Pair of Weaver finches and one canary. Its planted with a mini pond/waterfall and ground feeding stations (soon to add a hanging feeder). Its about 8X8X8

If it was me, I would probably go for it, as long as it looks like you have plenty of room to include a couple of red rumps. The fact that your aviary is planted is a big plus for your situation.

Your aviary sounds so nice! Do you have any photos? :P

Red rumps are actually known to be really agressive towards all other birds. THey are generally housed as one pair per aviary for that reason. That is the only reason I don't have a pair- I don't have an aviary that I can devote solely to a pair of red-rumps. They are well known for this, as are the other psephotus parrots (mulgas, golden-shouldered, hooded)
However, if the aviary is big enough, I do know a few people who have them is a mixed collection with relatively few problems. I'm not sure if 8X8 would be big enough. By all means you can try it out, but just be prepared that you may need to give them an aviary of their own if it doesn't work out.

    sorry, i disagree.
im a redrump owner and mine live in a flock of 50 cocatiels an eastern rosella and a galah.
the only trouble i get is a power struggle between two freakishly large cockatiels that are both almost as big as my galah

I'd imagine that wouldn't be a problem, especially as they are outnumbered and the other birds are larger. I've heard it can be touch and go as to how they are with birds smaller then them, such as turquoisines and scarlet-chested.
The only person I know who has kept them in a mixed collection had them with diamond doves, and they had no problems.

    I'd go for it Lori-D.
As i'm writing this there is a pair i'm watch from my kitchen window; feeding on the grass outside lol.

I wouldnt agree to say red rumps are purely aggresive birds- yet to say they are purely placid. 'New Guy On The Block', your situation is different. cockatiels are fine with red rumps due to the slightly larger size and bulkiness to there bodies. You get away with the eastern rosella as there is only one. I guarantee with a pair; troubles will begin.

Red rumps are fine with the finches, whydahs and weavers, small doves, canaries and softbills and parrots of slightly larger size.
Though i ashore you you'll have problems with bourkes and the scarlets Lori-D.
Red rumps will most certantly give bourkes and scarlets a very hard time.
Even with a large aviary of such.

All Psephotus parrots (mulga, golden-shouldered, hooded) can be kept with all but other parrots. But i've come to believe red rumps; you can get away with with birds of a larger size but certaintly not the others.

And besides from what i've read- that aviary sounds beautiful Lori-D!
Red rumps wont destroy the plantation but they arent birds that will get anything out of the vegetation if you know what i mean- they prefer open aviaries and will happily breed in a suspended or corresponding cage of a flight of 1.5 preferably 1.8- with a typical cockatiel box.

But you must trust me on red rumps WILL bully and possibly kill bourkes, scarlets, turks, bluewings or elegants.

    Its a parrot thing.

why would I go for it then if they will beat up my others? Scarlets and Bourkes were there first - Anyway, that ad is long gone...this thread is getting old already, lol. But thanks.
