respiratory infections

I was wondering how common it is for a bird with a respiratory infection to also have diarrhea. My amazon had been sneezing since he was given to me but I woke up to him having discharge all over his beak and when he sneezed a strand of mucus came out up until this morning there had been no discharge just a lot of sneezing. He started having diarrhea a couple days ago and was started on Baytril yesterday 2 x a day while waiting for the culture to come back. The psittacosis test using PCR came back negative, I am worried.

I just wanted to give an update too that his droppings are strating to look better, mushy but not watery anymore and I haven't seen anymore discharge since this morning. I did notice though that one of his nares is about twice the size of the other one, it's not something that will jump out at you but you'll notice it if you look for it. Is this common? Thanks

Only common if he has a horrible respiratory infection where his nostrils need to be cleaned out! What did the vet say about this????

Ellie Mae and her cag Coco had to go through a horrible experience so I suggest that you find out as much possible from the vet as you can. Check out these threads:

Thank you Monica, Ugh!! I remember seeing a picture of Coco and I know his nares don't look nearly as bad but now I'm concerned. I just noticed this morning and the vet didn't say anything so I don't think he noticed. Since there hadn't been any discharge up until this morning we were talking about the possibilty of him being allergic to my other birds. The culture too was only done on the droppings and not on the nares so I think I need to go back tomorrow and get a culture on them also for the Pseudonomas and have my vet look at his nares. Thanks

Leah:

You need to rule out aspergiliosis. Is your vet an avian vet? If not, please find a good avian vet or make sure your vet is working with a certified avian vet. With normal routine testing, its fine to use a general vet, but when your bird is obviously sick, its really best to stick with the specialists. Good luck.

Thanks Outlaw Yes, he's an avian vet, not a specialist(theres only one in my county and I don't care for him) but my vet alwasy consults specialists when treating my birds. He's already consulted 2 different ones for him so far and he's been treating my birds for over a year now. I completely trust him. I'm sure things will change when I tell him about the nares and discharge tomorrow.

I also just read that pseudonomas can also cause diarrhea so I think that's something I will definitely be looking into and also the aspergiliosis.
