There is much information out there, you just have to find it. Let us know the how, what, where and all that good stuff that you find out. Keeping fingers and whatnot crossed for you and yours.

Thanks Graeh, I can find general information but was wondering if it could cause the respiratory infection as well as the diarrhea. Thank you for the links.
Hey Joel! Yes, we smoke outside and always wash our hands before handling the birds. The amazon has only been here a week and came here sick and I dudn't mention earlier that he had what I thought were injuries to his feet when he got here. I took him to the vet the next day and he gave me an antiseptic to flush them with. Since starting the antibiotic they are improving slowly. The vet hadn't mentioned the foot necrosis with me but I found it odd he sent the infornation home with my husband so maybe he thinks this bird has it? I have read also that there is a connection with cocci bacteria to this also. I read that with the necrosis that smoke can be a factor but he had it before and he is only handled to give meds right now because he is cagebound, scared of hands and has no clue how to step up at all. I have been trying a little while he is out but he's just not getting it and right now I don't want to handle him too much because it seems to stress him out. Still a baby too, how sad for him to be going through all this. |

I had a chick die from that once. It got really sick and we found an over-growth of enteroccocus during the necropsy. So I would take this very seriously. Mind you it was a cockatiel chick. The vet said I most likey gave it to the chick myself, even though I did not mean to. I think enteroccocus is one of those that is found in us and normal but not found in birds normally?

Wow Joel that was great and very sweet of you. For a second I thought it was from the same book the vet photocopied from. It's very similiar to what he sent home with hubby. I haven't seen him chew on his foot at all but I have to say it was nasty looking the skin was all cracked and black looking, it's starting to look better now. He also didn't act like it hurt him in anyway(one toe in particuliar was pretty bad) so I really wonder if this could be it. I'm still waiting for more tests to come back and the vet is supposed to call me some time today. Everthing I have read so far though does mention smoking and food allergies as possible causes.
Thanks again!!!!!! LeahQuote:
