Cage Size????

Have another question? We just got another parakeet that is about 3-4 months old. The cage he is in is a small cage. It is about 8" deep, 11: wide and about 13" high. Is this too small?? It does seem kind of crowded in there. We only have a swing, 2 perches and 1 hanging toy. Should we think about getting a bigger cage or will this be fine???

Thanks, Daniel

That is WAY too small, even for a finch. For the smallest of birds, I recommend a cage size minimum of 2' square as they need to be able to fly around and have plenty of room for toys, perches, and food dishes (even if it were for a finch or canary). The largest bird to be in a 2' square cage would be a cockatiel (or the smaller conures such as green cheeks, and maroon bellies). Please go out and find a larger cage for your new budgie.

Thanks. We are going to look into a bigger cage. She has had parakeets all her life and always had small cages like this for them. Seems like alot of people say bigger is a little better. Gonna try that out and see how it goes.

Small cages do not provide enough room for exercise, toys, perches, and dishes. With cages, bigger is always better, as long as the bar dimensions are appropriate (not too far apart).

Thanks for the advice. Went out today and got a bigger cage for Bruin. He took right to it and has been chirping away non stop since he got into his bigger, new home.

When I purchased my Lovie at the petstore, amazingly, probably cause the clerk was a young kid and was trying to be very honest and nice with me, told me to get a cage about that size for my lovie, trying to save me money!

He told me that it was all they needed.

I looked at it and thought to myself, if I was going to buy a bird that is going to be with me hopefully for the next two decades, I might as well splurge and buy a decent size cage ONCE and feel better knowing my birdie is comfy, rather than buy something cheesy, feel guilty about it, and having to "update it" as time goes on!

Needless to say, I bought him one of the biggest cage the store had that was of appropriate spacing.

True, the cage costs more than double what my bird cost, but I am VERY HAPPY I didn't hold back spending that extra few dollars!

Now I can put in as many toys and swings and perches I want, design it anyway I see fit, have the ease and convenience of removing the entire bottom for easy cleaning, and feel good that my birds one true "personal space" is top of the line!

What does all my gibberish mean?

If there's ONE thing you can really spoil your Fid with, let it be his cage! Like your home, its where his heart REALLY is! hahhahaha. (I'm so corny!)
