Cats vs. birds

I am new to the bird world. My first bird Derby the Cockatiel has been with me for about 4 months. Two of my cats pretty much ignore Derby. But one of them Atticus seems very interested in Derby.
I have a one bedroom apartment so there isn't a lot of space but when I leave I lock the cats in the bedroom because Atticus keeps trying to jump up on the tv stand that Derby's cage is on.
Any input on cat bird relations would be helpful.
Thanks

It is a cat's natural instincts to attack a bird, so it is important to keep them apart. Please continue to lock the cats in the bedroom. Also cat saliva is deadly to birds so you have to make sure they never lick or bite your birds.
