Post 2 Budgies With A Cockatiel

Hey everyone!!!

Its a really long time i havn't posted here but its been a year now that I have 2 male budgies (JayJay and Lolo) and i would like to purchase a cockatiel! I Would like to know if there would be any problems introducing my budgies with the tiel. Naturally they will be in separate cages but i always wondered if there would be behavioral problems or any other when i would take them out at the same time. I would also like to teach my cockatiel how to speak and a few tricks here and there...would he still listen to me if there are other birds in the house? Or will it be harder to train him even tho they are completly different species of birds. Feel free to tell me all the info and knowledge u know about these 2 species being together in separate cages thnx!

My daughter's 2 budgies live in her room, but she brings them out in the evenings for 'play time', at which point the two budgies, my two 'tiels and the WC all hang out primarily on the 'tiel cage...

...it's awfully cute...

...don't know what to suggest about the talking, none of my 'tiels ever talked, but I never bothered to try and teach them...I'm happy with their whistling...

I have a female cockatiel and two male budgies (along with a few other birds). In my experience, the budgies will only want to flirt or taunt the cockatiel (if any attention paid to what-so-ever). Smurf is my little playboy and loves to flirt with any other bird or even pick on Casey (the tiel). Cosmo is more laid back and prefers to be by himself most of the time, unless he is flirting or argueing with Smurf.

If your budgies do take any interest in your new cockatiel then they may flirt or taunt him far too much and being that cockatiels are more passive creatures than budgies, may not enjoy that type of attention. It would be best to introduce them slowly and letting them get used to eachother via views from eachothers cages, and letting out only your cockatiel, or only the budgies for a couple of weeks before letting them all out at the same time.

You might want to consider however buying a handraised cockatiel from a breeder so that the tiel will be more human orientated than to birds. However, as much training and taming that you do, you can never assure that he (or she) will talk. If your tiel has no problem with the budgies being in the same room as you then handling him/her should be fine, however if the tiel takes interest in the budgies you may want to take him to other parts of the house to try working with him.

My budgies hate our other birds and they hate the budgies. The only ones the budgies like is the canary. The tiels especially hate the budgies. Everyone has their own play areas and time with us. Seems to work for the birds.

10 to 12 weeks of age is when young hand-fed tiels can be sold. Cost in Canada I am not sure, but in us a normal grey hand-fed is about $50 to $75 depending on where you get the bird.

at that age....would it be easy to tame then and to teach them stuff for example step up and other things like talking and whistling to certain tunes....does having other kinds of species of birds in the house affect the learning of the cockatiel?

Yes and they usually very social at that age, especially if you get one that just completed hand-feeding.
