Amazons and Conures

When I took Oscar to his 1st vet appointment on Saturday, my vet was VERY concerned about me having an amazon in the house with a conure. He said there's a bacteria that conures are notorious for carrying (I believe he said it was similar to the Herpes strand, but that's not really a bacteria, is it?) that, though not harmful to conures or some other parrots, is very deadly to amazons. He also said that there was not test or treatment for it.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Would it really be necessary to re-home my conure?

Herpes is a virus.

He may be referring to the Pacheco's virus. I'll have to look that up again but I don't think you have to be concerned about that or rehome your conure. Maybe John can shed some more light on that or someone else on here?

I'll try to remember to look it up later unless one of ya want to do a Google search in the meantime (if on there?).

Remember ya can have your conure tested for that virus etc......

Yeah, I've read a few articles on Pacheco's Disease on the internet. Google it.

I remember him distinctly saying that there was no test or treatment...and I'm almost positive he said it was a bacteria...the herpes-like virus may have been related to something else we were discussing when it came to birdie diseases

How about just giving him a quick phone call today or tomorrow and tell him to elaborate or just give ya the exact name and we can look it up for ya in all our birdie medical books.

I hope not either...he's such a cutie-pie! I love him so much, and I'm hoping to work with him more to not be so afraid of being petted or touched other than "step up". He's so beautiful and I fell in love with him the first time I saw him....my parents are thinking about lettling me rehome him with my little brother.
