Alaska and her flying problem
Alaska's wings are clipped but she still flys and she flys into walls. Maybe I didnt clip them short enough but I'm getting worried because she has a little cut on her nose. Where can I find the link on how to clipp wings.

Thanx a bunch. I know you don't like clipping wings Joel but it's better than her bashing her beak into the walls and flying out the door to be lost for ever. I don't wanna lose her. By the time she molts I'll be in a house where she can have her own room since the standard issue house on base is a two bed room.

She's tamed and she can still get a little lift just not enough to get out the door or fly on top of the fridge.

It's important to clip the wings so that they can land without breaking their sternum. They should be able to fly straight without gaining altitude. You may want to call a pet shop or breeder to have them show you how to properly cut the wings the first few times.
Joel, I do agree with you. Cats shouldn't be declawed...claws are their nature. Birds fly....that is THEIR nature. Nothing in my house has been altered and birds do learn to fly within their given perimeter safely. However, I'd rather see clipped wings than a dead bird or a lost bird. That's the flip side.

I don't clip my birds either, but then I (and Joel) don't have kids who could be running around leaving doors and windows open. A lot of BB'ers do have kids and that puts a whole 'nother slant on things. Cockatiels can still fly even when clipped so that won't necessarily stop them getting away. You really need to make sure everyone in your home is aware of where your birds are if they have free flight.

The Prez
A Good Wing Clip Doesnt Mean That The Bird Will Be Unable To Fly. The Bird Must Be Able To At Least Glide To The Floor Not Fall And Break A Bone. The Bird Will Soon Learn Its Abilitys And Limatations. I Personaly Dont Clip My Birds Wings But I Currently Live Alone And Dont Have To Worry About Someone Letting The Birds Out While Loose. I Have Always Had Other Animals In The House And Wanted My Birds To Have The Ability To "get Away" If Needed. But If You Are Worried About Your Birds Getting Out Then Clipping Will Help As Long As You Keep In Mind That The Bird Can Still Fly With Their Wings Clipped And You Will Still Have To Be Careful While The Birds Are Out Of Their Cages.
