Question Winter

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post here. I have been reading the posts for a few days and decided.... it's time. I am the proud mom/grandma/foster mom/aunt of:
My Fid Babies:
*Polly- Sun Conure
*Sonny-Sun Conure
*Kiki-Pearl Cockatiel
*Kira-Normal Grey Cockatiel
*Lenny-Gold Capped Conure
*Tiki-Umbrella Cockatoo
My Grandfids:
*Jamie-Am Keet
*Jasmine-Am Keet
*Ducky-Am Keet
*Squirt-Am Keet
My Foster Fid:
*Piglet-Brown Throated Conure
My Great Nephew Fid:
*Chico-Lutino Cinnamon Cockatiel

My question is- We have a wood burning stove in our finished basement. My birds are in a room at the top of the steps, is it safe to use a wood burning stove with birds?

No. The wood is usually treated and it gives off unhealthy fumes.

I have a woodburning stove and have been in my house for 18 years. I've never used it. I've never used the fireplace either.

I know for a fact that the wood is not treated, it is from my property. Is it okay then?

I had a wood burning stove in my old home and for some time it was our only source of heat. We had a few trees cut down in our back yard, and used them over time. We whethered a bunch of nasty snow storms and lost all power for days at a time.
Yes, if you can imagine, it was my job to split the wood, stack it, hump it into the house and keep the stove lit round the clock.....
Thus a good reason to get rid of THAT husband!!!!
Just make sure the wood is NOT treated, you have proper ventilation and the chimney is clean and ready to go.
Watch for smoke, any hint of fumes, and keep the birds away from it.
We has less smoke from our woodburning stove, then the fireplace. *yep, had to use that more then once too for heat here in the woods of Jersey!*

Okay, so, I'm assuming that as long as the wood is not treated, it's okay to heat my home with home with the stove. Now, my next question is, what is bad about burning candles? Is it the lead wick or the smell?

Thank you Monica. Do you know if those Glade Scented Oils are okay?

No scented candles at all! They have essential oils in them and that is where the problem is. Most candles do not use lead in the wicks anymore, but the carbon and soot off the open flames as well as the oils in them can cause problems for the birds.

Oh my, conflicting answers. Thank you both for your input. If anyone else has anything, please let me know.
