Meyers Parrot Question

Hi everyone!

In my avatar, you can see my Meyers parrot; Oscar. That
picture was taken a good 4 months ago now...

They thought Oscar was a boy when I bought him, at just 4
mos. old, so I named the bird Oscar. But it was just a guess
on our part...

Since then (almost a year now) Oscar hasn't grown much at all!
He's still just about the same size as he was when I got him.
He's slim, petite, but he eats well, he's healthy and happy and
well feathered.
But I've seen other 4-5 month old Meyers
in pet shops now that are literally TWICE his size, or more.
So, I'm thinking Oscar is either a "pygmy" meyers,
or Oscar is a girl.

Ok, now my question; I've been noticing over the
last few weeks that the yellow patches on the outer
shoulder/wing areas are getting smaller...
he's molted recently and there's more of the dark grey
coloring and less yellow, now.
But this morning as I was petting him and doing our
morning rubbing and scritching routine,
I was shocked to see
that a good 40-50% of his UNDERWINGS were yellow!! Wow!
Like when did THAT happen!? LOL Wasn't like that the last
time I clipped his wings...

It's been a while since I read up about the Meyers on line or
in parrot books, and I do remember it being mentioned that
they can vary in size quite a bit.
But I don't recall any information mentioning the yellow underwings.
I'm not saying it wasn't mentioned anywhere in any discription-
I'm just saying I don't remember it mentioned....

Anyone out there have a mature Meyers?
Have you noticed their yellow patches or coloring changing
with molts or with aging?

Savvy*

I don't have a Meyers, Savvy, but I have a Senegal, and she is quite petite. My vet said that pois range a lot in size - plus, she gets a lot of exercise. You just have to keep in mind what the normal weight is for your bird. I know Cory's coloring has changed a lot since we got her. She was 4 months when we got her and she's almost 2 now (my New Year's baby). Her head has changed color and her "epaulets" have gotten smaller.

thanks LMPego!

It helps to know that you've seen color changes over time...
and that your Sennie is a bit on the "shrimpy" side too.

They are neat birds though, aren't they? :D

I love the pois - I want to get another one, but I can only handle as many birds as there are people in my house!

BTW: Cory was in for grooming this morning and gained 6 grams! Big fatty...

I have a Meyers and they can vary in size but that doesnt really indicate if its a male of female. But I have notice that females are around 120g and male more around 130. But physicly you cant tell the gender unless you have your Meyers DNA'd. The yellow on the wings can vary in each molting. You know how much your Meyers weight?

Saavy Meyers do get yellow under the wing like yours has now. My book does not say whether or not it varies, it just says yellow feathering underside of wing.

Looks like this an older thread, but I'll answer anyway. My meyer's did the same thing. The yellow patches on top of the wings got smaller and more yellow started appearing under the wings. At the same time, she started getting the yellow on her head, which is slowly getting bigger as she gets older.

Color

Savvy, i was just wondering if the Bright colors of your meyers were always that bright or has that happened over time. We just got a meyers this week and he is now three months old. Sidney is not nearly as bright and colorful as yours. He is beautiful, but just not as bright...please let me know..thanks George

Savvy's avatar has changed since that post. The bird in the avatar is a male eclectus. If you look in the Poicephalus section of the photo album here, you will see some pics of older Meyer's. I posted several (OK...I know...probably overkill!) of mine.
