Need advice!!URGENT

Okay..... I have just about to have an experiment with my tiel. My tiel always wants to go outside where all the grass trees are. I was thinking maybe clipping my tiels wings but I could not find any vet living near me and I have absoulte no confidence doing it myself(I have heard someone cut in too deep while clipping their bird and had to have surgery). I was thinking... maybe I should put a fishing wire around its leg????? Obviously I will put some tape around its leg first so that it will not do any harm to him or put pressure on his leg. Would this work? HAs anyone tried this??

I know it sounds bizzare but I just want my tiel to have an experience of an outdoor place. (stiing on trees etc etc)
PLease dont hate me for this. Just an opinion because wing clipping..... I am very scared of.

Any adivces??? Thanks

I would say most definately not. Please do not do this. My advice to you would be not to try and clip your birds wings if you have never done it before. Please do not attempt to put the fishing wire around it's leg. This is a receipe for disaster. It will cut off the circulation to his leg and then get wraped around his whole body. Your bird will be wrapped up in this wire before you know it. I think it would scare your bird and confuse your bird.

Yes this is a very dangerous thing to do, and it's not all that important that you bird go outside and be free, you can put it in a cage and bring him outside. Believe it or not, for a "house" bird, going outside if very stressful and scary. Even a good wing clip doesn't guarantee that it won't and can't fly away. Especially a tiel, a good enough wind can send it far far away. Tying anything around it's leg will surely severe the leg should he try and fly away. I'm glad you changed your mind

One of the neighbours mentioned this to me because she said she also had a tiel but she had those little rings??? Or are they metal bands? They were used for identification and she trained her babies to get used to them. Maybe I just got jealous....... anyway it is completly out of my mind because I thought it was a very foolish thing to do as well.

Sorry people...... its just that Im still learning as well.... just needed advices.
PS: please dont hate me for this thread....(hehe)

EDIT: Okay I went down to my neighbour and what I saw was a little metal ring on each of the tiels legs. Shes been breeding tiels for as long as I can remember now. But Im wondering what are those rings called? And also they have got some string on their legs??? WHat in the world is the strings for? Cant ask the breeder right now because shes on a holiday and Im looking after her flock(got keys for her house). Any advices people? Im sure they are not indentification bands because they have little strings attatched to them.

Any advices? Thanks

The rings are bands used to identify birds. Usually they contain numbers and letter identifying the breeder, year of hatch and number of clutch.

It is ILLEGAL in the United States to tie anything to a parrot's leg. Its considered cruel. Falconers, however, can use jesses.

Get a flight suit from any pet store and put it on him, it goes over the entire body and leaves the wings free, and a leash attaches to it.

Build your Tiel a long flight cage outside, safe & secure from predators: (approx. 7' x 3&1/2' x 4-6' tall) (1/2"x1" GAW wire or S.S. Steel wire is best) or even use safe wood and plexiglass (polycarbonate flat panels), ....Solid roof (I prefer metal) with overhang on all sides & a double bottom to protect feet from being grabbed from underneath the cage. Add natural safe wood perches at each end and that is about as good as ya can get outside IMO.

Yes, flight suits are by far the safest and most comfortable for the bird. If you take the bird outdoors, you will still need the leash/lanyard that attaches to it because as you can see here, they can still fly very well.
