Use a mineral block because cuttlebone splinters can perforate the crop or create a blockage (ive seen it happen)

I dont know why they still sell that garbage for parrots when they know full well that they are unsafe.

Just wanted to give an update on Minky...I ended up not returning him to the breeder and not taking him to my mom's house. Just being careful to keep him away from the other birds. We've had no further seizure activity and he has put on about 1/4 of an ounce. He was VERY active this morning for the first time--trying to pull up the paper at the bottom of his cage, etc. Fingers crossed I think he might be OK, but we'll still keep an eye on him.

I'm really glad to hear that he's doing better. Now that you said you didn't return him to the breeder, I can now tell you that I was hoping you would't. I'll keep praying that it was a one time deal and won't happen again. That happens to humans as well. I know of a child that had a seizure once and it never happened again. She was in the hospital to figure out what happened and they never found the cause and it never happened again. I'm praying that the same is with your birdy.

if you are really worried about your baby getting enough calcium, you should try using calcium care by pheonix unlimited, instead of cuttlebone. its a very soft powder that you just sprinkle a littel bit on top of their fresh food, for a pet, usually only once or twice a week, any more than that and you could overdose your pet bird. you arent supposed to use it if your birds are under 6mo old though. we also give hard boiled eggs, crushed, shell and all, to our breeders, for added calcium.

Scraping cuttlebone and mixing it into the soft food is probably cheaper, yet just as effective. Because of the posts I've read about the problems with cuttlebone, that's the only way I'll "feed" it.

I'm so glad to read about your decision to keep the baby.
