Question Why does my CAG grind her beak while going off to sleep??

Does anyone know why Summer does this and if it's normal AG behavior?? She's always done it, I just wonder why she does it, and another thing she does is like a yawn, does anyone know why they do this also?? And while I'm asking the "WHY'S" why does she also make like a sneezing noise every now and then?? Thanks in advance for any info on this.
~Kris~

My blue crown conure does those also. the beak grinding just a comfort thing I think. I remember reading that somewhere but off the top of my head I can't remember where tho. Bud also yawns & sneezes. the sneezing thing is mostly to clear their nares (nose), but if it's a constant thing then it's something more serious. since she recently just came back home from having her little "vacation", has she had any problems with being sick or just acting different?

Beak grinding is contentment, and yes they do yawn and sneeze. However, like mizbirdy said, if it's constant sneezing could be something more serious.

"Because, because, because ... it's one of the wonderful things a Grey does ... We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of ..."

Sorry, couldn't resist there but all of those things are nothing to worry about. The beak grinding before going to sleep just means that they are very comfortable and happy and have no "fears" of going to sleep.

The yawning thing ... just like people, why do we do it? It's just one of those things I guess as well as the sneezing. Both of mine do all those things and on a regular basis and have never had any problems due to that.
You just seem to have a happy baby is all, Congrats.

My fids do this also. I have also read that they are sharpening their beaks to prepare for the next day's tasks of foraging and cracking open their food.

Thanks everyone!! You're all so wonderful!! I am so lucky to have Summer back home and just as lucky to have found this message board to have other parronts to help out when in doubt!! Thanks a million!!

P.S. I'm going to post a video clip of Summer trying her "talking" skills out, sometime this weekend, if I can figure it out.

Oh, and Summer's sneezing isn't consistant, just every now and then. I just thought that since I was on a roll with asking all the "why's" I'd get them all out at once. LOL!

Hey Kris!

Sooo happy Summer is doing so well and seems to have no "issues" after her little adventure in the woods!

Maddie also does the little beak grinding thing. I love it! Sometimes she does it when I'm laying on the couch next to her cage and it puts ME to sleep!!!
I was taught by the breeder that it's a great sound ~ happy, contented, comfortable with life and their flock! So in my mind it means I can sleep too!

I just took her to the Avian Vet because I thought she had the sniffles? But it's apparently just little grunting noises she makes while playing or practicing her chatting skills!

Can't wait to see video of Summer trying to talk!

~Kris

Both Quito and Tausi grind their beaks when they are happily drowsing. About the sniffles and sneezing...........you don't have anyone in the house who has sinus troubles, do you? Perhaps she's imitating?
