please help with my bird

Hello,
I have an Indian ring neck. It's my first bird so i'm not very experienced. As i was trying to keep it from flying away from me, i tried to hold his foot, and I heard a little snap from the rear 1/3 portion of his rear toe. he walks fine fornow and it looks a little crooked, maybe. He wont let me touch it. do I need to have a splint put on it. how do i know if it's broken? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My advice would be to take him to an Avian Vet first thing tomorrow. Thats the only way you are going to find out if it's broken or not and what you need to do.

agreed.... hard to tell without seeing the little foot - is he favoring the other foot? does it seem like he has problems perching/walking?

please keep us posted

Third vote for the vet. I have a couple of ringies and I know they can be a challenge (and a great joy). While you are at the vet, you may want to discuss clipping his wings while you are training him to decide if that is a good option for you. Please let us know how it turns out and we would love to see a picture of your IRN.

Fourth vet vote. You can never be too careful, especially with your avian pets. If you aren't familiar with birds and this is your first one, you definitely want to sit down with your vet and discuss diet, handling, as Mary said "clipping". Also, please know that birds are very proficient at hiding injury and illness. It's in their nature. Good luck with your new baby and let us know how it goes!
