Panting...

I've been incapacitated for a few days due to back problems. I haven't been able to take the birds out and play with them too much, because I can't really walk. Well, after a couple hours today (cuz I couldn't walk, not cuz she wouldn't come out), I managed to get Beeker (CAG) out of her cage, and onto her hoopball. We did some trick training, and after about five minutes she started doing this thing, where she puts her wings down, and starts doing this panting-type thing. I don't know if it's panting or not, but she only does it when I'm paying attention to her, when I stop looking, she stops doing it. It's not quiet either...but she's doing the same thing she did when I was petting her, and she put her wings down to try to cover my face. Then, just now, we were having our little time together before she goes to bed, and she started doing it again. If I ignore her she stops, and it seems like the panting is intentional. She puts her wings down, and makes that noise, and she looks at me like she's expecting me to do something. Any ideas what the heck she's doing? I don't think she's sick, cuz she's still doing everything else normal, but maybe? I just don't know.

Thanks!
Erin

sounds like your bird is going through some (love) hormones...i've read of someone else's CAG going through a similar phase.

Do you have a dog in the house? Mine learned it by imitating the dog panting!

we do have dogs, 2 actually, but i've never heard a noise like this come from a dog...maybe they do it when we're not here? If she's doing the hormonal thing, how long does this stage usually last? I've never seen our little bird (GCC) do this, but maybe she's just not old enough to be hormonal yet, though she is 15 mos old. But it's good to know that it doesn't sound like something we should be concerned about!!

Thanks so much!!!

I went to the vet in the spring only to find out we had some "love" panting going on. It's the same thing you describe I come near or look at him and I get the reaction.. Just wait till he pukes for you. I'm still trying to figure out how to tell my male parrot that my human butt can't possibly fit in any nest he has in mind... I'm also trying to explain to my husband that the "wolfy" panting from a parrot is nothing to be jealous of.. go figure.

You can bring him to an Avian vet for peace of mind.

I agree that it sounds to me like your bird is in looooove with you. Lucky you!!

Where the heck is Joel when we need him? He's our resident expert on full spectrum lighting for birds, but I believe, based upon his posts, that his expertise may also extend to the topic of "panting". Any thoughts, Joel?

Anyway, good luck with your birdie. I'm sure everything will be fine in time.

Sounds like your birdies need a magazine and a little private time.

Well Counsel , you may have to call a few witnesses/past Compound visitors to the stand for the answer to your query ...... as (IMO) I am not really a "panter" myself (definitely a Panther though - most of the time ).

Note: Some may be reluctant to testify though due to current or so-called current relationships (or for other reasons that may infringe upon their 5th Amendment rights ). Others may just be shy somewhat even though they were not so shy while here - I could tell ya stories ..... Each btw (evidence available), still has an initialized lab coat (with DNA attached) hanging on the Visitor Hook Rack , a different slinky sheer color for each.

Counsel, would you care to come inspect the evidence for yourself. .... I think Black may just be YOUR color.

P.S: Fair Warning to Counsel: Past Compound visitors may respond with either one of the following emoticons so please prepare the Jury in advance with the translations as the presiding judge has ruled that lengthy explanations by past visitors will not be tolerated (the court system is already backed up too much these days). ....The court has ruled - in prior cases - that violators who insist on worded explanations will be sent to Tara's Dungeon (in Uncaged) for disciplinary measures - to be carried out by the Head of Security there.

= Witness takes the 5th for various reasons.
= Witness is/was kinky & thus chooses to remain silent to protect open info. on her kinkiness.
= Witness had such a good time that she wants to leave it at that so she is invited back.
or double = Witness still hasn't gotten over the thrills she saw/experienced while visiting.
= Witness is/was Blonde.
= Witness is still singing about the amazement regarding the intensity of her "visit".
= Witness signed contract when arriving that confidentiality about her would be kept & not violated.
= Witness is still hyper-ventillating - use your imagination.
= Witness is just simply at a loss for words and will send the court written testimony vs. verbal testimony (will be allowed in this court per Judge Joey - due to time constraints).

The other emoticons allowed will be illustrated in a docket sent to your office for your prior review .....Any vocal outbursts or printed comments by any witnesses will be taken as Contempt for the rules of the Court and therefore will be thrown out. Jurors will be instructed to disregard these comments as an attempt to point fingers and cloud the evidence that is in lockdown at the Compound. Such evidence at the Compound can be viewed on site by each juror. Each Juror must make an individual appt. to view same.........

Are you sure you don't work for the IRS? Your "rules" are nearly as convoluted and complex as the Tax Code!!!

As for a sheer BLACK labcoat, would you please be sure it has a nice, lacy ruffle on the bottom for me? I don't wish to blend in with all your prior visitors at the Everglades Compound. Actually, scratch that.....I'm pretty confident that IF I was to "visit", you'd never confuse me with your many other visitors....

P.S. Let me guess: You just happen to moonlight as Head of Security in Tara's Uncaged Dungeon, now don't you? If so, I can only imagine the "torture" you inflict.....
