Maui has an owie on his foot

I just noticed that Maui has some kind of injury on his foot. He wasn't limping or favouring his foot at all. I didn't notice it until I was in there giving the birds treats through the aviary wire. It's Saturday 7pm and the avian vet doesn't work weekends anymore, though I could try going down there tomorrow morning to see if a nurse pops in to feed any in-patients. I have some iodine antiseptic swabs on hand, I don't know if that would do any good? If anyone can think of anything else I could do or buy to help him along, please give generic equivalents, not brand names as our brand names would probably be different over here.

He's otherwise fine, eats like a pig, poops normal and cuddly as ever. I've been watching him fly and land with no problems. He perches normally without favouring the foot (not in pain). I don't know what happened, he might have squabbled with another bird.

So far, I have only washed the foot with warm water and towel dried it. I was thinking that he had stepped in poop and it stuck to his foot. I haven't given him anything else. The foot is swollen and there is a brown spot on it, you can see in the photos.

I LOVE this little guy, so I would appreciate any help.

Looks he has a little infection goin on there.....the anitseptic swaps probably wouldn't hurt, to keep it clean....if you can get some Neo-Sporin cream (make sure its the cream, not ointment) and apply some to the wound.

Looks like a bite to me, but is there anyplace in the aviary he could have got the toes caught?

It's probably a bite. The birds squabble all the time over who gets to eat first. This is the first time this has happened and I checked everyone else's feet-no problems. I put the iodine on it and will look for that Neosporin when the shops open.

Update: We don't have Neosporin cream in Australia by any name. I asked the pharmacist by the active ingredients. We haven't had it for a couple years and when we did it was prescription only. I had to settle for Betadyne. Maui is definitely going to the vet tomorrow. He is still using his foot just fine but I don't want to take any chances.

Its definitely a bite. Just try to soak it in the betadine and some warm water. I do think he'll lose the tip of his toe, but don't get stressed. Again, its simply something that happened and is very common. You will have to watch Chaska very carefully however. Quakers can be very aggressive with other birds.

I just got this from Tara via MSN, she had to rush off to work but wanted everyone to know the results of the vet visit.

Maui will be OK. No infection. The AV gave me meds to give him over the next week to prevent swelling and hopefully save his toe. If he loses it, it would be because the scab consticts flow of blood to the toe. So he gave him Metacam twice daily and Lincospectin powder as a water supplement. So everyone please pray that this works and my baby doesn't lose his toe! He's down to 84gr so needs
