It is good advice. The nearest avian vets to me at all 45+ minutes away. The nearest 24 hour emergency place that sees birds is an hour away. I haven't been there, but it's probably not a bad idea to take a drive just in case. The vet where I work has a vet who "sees birds" but in no way would you want to go there if your bird was sick or injured! Although I guess we could at least give oxygen and possibly stabilize so that you could make the trip to the other place.

I'm in Nothern NJ and our emergency vet is...
Animal Emergency & Referal Center
647 Bloomfield Ave
West Caldwell NJ 07006
(973)226-3282

They have vets that are board certified in everything! I've been in there on weekends and a few holidays and there are people there with evrything from little turtles, cats, birds, lizards, snakes all the way to large dogs. I expected Dr Dolittle to walk in and talk to the animals! Great place!

Here's a link to find avian vets in the USA, Australia and Europe:

http://www.aav.org/

I've stickied this thread (and copied it into the Emergency Response forum) and I hope everyone will visit this link, find your nearest avian vet, program your cell phones and print out a Mapquest if you don't know where their office is. Be prepared now!

question...

this is a really great post, and i'm glad it's a sticky.

however stupid this may sound, i was just wondering what exactly should go in a first aid kit? i've been meaning to make one for quite some time now.

as for vet numbers, i have one right next to the bird cages, and am googling some others in my area right now!

Not a stupid question whatsoever. Very timely, actually:
First aid kit...opinions

Gary, this was a great original post. Very important.

It's one of those things you think you'll never need...until you need it.

This board is great for support during an emergency, but will not take the place of a vet.

The computer is not going to perform first aid, etc.

I have magnets on my fridge with my vets' information. Also, the numbers are in my phone.

I live in the Hampton Roads area in the state of Virginia. We have absolutely NO emergency avian vets. We have emergency vet offices open on weekends and after hours but there is NEVER EVER an avian vet on duty in ANY of the locations in case of an emergency. Isnt that terrible? I have even voiced my concerns over this to MY regular avian vet (who is excellent by the way) that even if they could get together (there are five in this area) and maybe be placed on a stand-by call list with the emergency facilities that would be something. I have only had one emergency and I was told by all emergency places that I called that Saturday afternoon, that I could bring my bird in but basically the vet on duty had no real experience with birds. Nice Huh? I was even told by one location that I would be better off keeping my bird warm and quiet until I could see my regular vet on Monday. The bird/pet store up the street and their WONDERFUL staff.... is my emergency vet and guess what they dont cost a thing. They helped me out a couple of times. I thank god for them everyday. The staff at Pet Paradise in Virginia Beach.... you are absolutely WONDERFUL.

I sware, if you think that if ur bird is sick u can just leave it there and say "It'll get better" you must be mental o.o Birds need a vet just as any other pet would. I mean, if u had a kid that got sick liek a bird would you let him or her go to school and say "He'll/she'll get better" ?! you would have to be heartless to leave a brid sick in your house

Well I just called all around and found one place not far from me that has two Docs. on staff that are Av docs. and if they are closed or those docs are not working that day they have a referral program. My regular vet only does maintenance and the closest urgent care just told me to call the place I already called. They did say that they can do limited stuff but of course I would need to get the bird to an av doc asap. I was hoping for more. I guess I will call around some more or check the yellow pages for av docs near me. I want to have more than one option. I did put all the numbers in my cel though. I always keep my vets numbers in my cel.
