New Alexandrine Grumpy & Scared

Whenever i take my alexandrine out of its cage and place him on the floor he trys to fly and manages to get about 10cm off the ground then runs back to his cage, Should i just give him some time in the cage? (couple days) or do i have to keep taking him out more and more so he gets use to me and will not be afraid.

Also i take him out with a towel so he wont bite me, the towel already has several holes lol. Any guides on how i can earn his trust?

Thanks

I'm sure others know more than I do, but could it be that he's scared of being on the floor, with every other thing towering over him? How about putting him on a table or a stand and see how he reacts to that? Just a thought, and if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will have a better idea.

He is just in a strange place and the cage is the safety that he knows. How long have you had him? Just keep talking to him, try feeding him by hand in his cage. I think he will be fine; let him make his own speed for now. It may take weeks or months before he feels safe and wants to be handled. Imagine if you were sitting in your living room and someone put a blanket over your head, picked you up and put you on top of a mountain a half mile away. Would make you want to go home really badly the first few times. Once you felt safe and comfortable, it might be fun! Hang in there, you will do great.

Try using food to coach him out, I only towel wild birds and animals to distance myself. To biting birds try thick garden gloves that way he can still see instead of being blinded. Just needs time to learn how to trust you. I am soon to get an Alex so will then too experience the bite they can give, however, i have had alot worse bites than an Alex could give me so am not really scared. May need to get the old garden gloves out again though lol. Used to use them for taming tiels..only had to use them on one though, he was savage..became the tamest bird I have ever known though. P.S.....where in Brissy?

It took about a month to earn my ringnecks trust he was terrified of everything. He was about same age as yours when I got him, I just kept walking towards his cage and stopping when he showed he was afraid , I seemed to get a bit closer every day, then one day I got right up close and he took some fruit from my hand! now he's about 10 months, talking but some words are not so clear yet and doing a few tricks, I just took it at his pace, but it's amazing how intelligent they are!

Not sure if this will help you or other readers but when I got my Nanday Conure he'd try to bite if i stuck my hand in to get him out. What we ended up doing was leaving his door open, wait until he came out on the door, and used a towel to cover the entrance, then he was more then willing to step up.

absolutly try to to stay away from the towel until he learns to trust you. He wont learn to trust you if everytime you go near him he gets grabbed by a towel and put very low down.
Its very common for alexandrines to not like to be "cuddled" say, by a towel (although im just generalising here) but your on the right track. Its obvious that you love him very much :)
He probably will take a while to just settle in and be himself so don't stress:)

Yeah Alex's arent very cuddly. Try not putting it on the floor, alex's tend to like being high up and start feeling anxious when low to the ground.
