City ordinance being written to ban exotics w/in city limits

Hello all, I live in Idaho Falls, ID and the city attorney has drawn up an ordinance that if passed, will ban any animal that does not get a rabies shot. This would of course include birds. I have three parrots and they'll take them over my dead body but has anyone out there been in a similar situation? What if anything can I do? Please respond, the vote is one week from Thursday April 22nd. Thank you.

This should not include parrots, as its much harder to vaccinate a parrot from diseases, especially ones that mammals catch. Their are bird vaccinations, however, people are not going to vaccinate their dog or cat with something that only maybe a bird would get!

I don't know about birds and rabies though, but I am against it. Sorry though, that I have not been in a similar situation, but if you can, speak up for yourself and other bird people in the area (possibly contact a bird club there if you have one and see their opinions, views, etc???).

I think you need to post the exact bill. I can't imagine exotics such as birds and reptiles falling under that doctrine. Makes no sense. Would that include fish? See what I mean?

You might want to point the folk authoring this bill to the following URL:
http://www.idph.state.il.us/public/hb/hbrabies.htm
This is a State of Illinois Health Dep't page that lists the animals that can, and more importantly CANNOT CONTRACT RABIES

No avifauna can contract, carry, or transmit rabies. Once this is made clear to the persons on your local city council it should be a "No Brainer" To have the proposal amended to specifically state that the proposed law only applies to those species subject to rabies infection (exempting humans, obviously). BTW, good catch. We as bird companions need to keep abreast of local, state, & federal proposals that could effect our psittacine friends.[/url]

That's a good site! I agree with you, Yehudasf.

I've only known of mammals contracting this disease, so it should be to mammals only, mainly for dogs, cats, and similar sized or larger mammals that live in the city.
