Pet Store Health Inspector?
Is there anything along the lines of a Pet Store Health Inspector? There is this one pet shop which is just appalling. There are at least five hospital tanks for sick fish. In over half of the tanks there are dead fish rotting and being eaten and in most cases the fish in the tanks are barely visible due to overwhelming algae growth. The room where the birds, small animals and rodents are kept is filthy all the way around and even the store bird, a macaw kept in the office is losing his feathers to the skin. I don't necessarily want to have the shop closed down, it is the only shop within fifty miles from us, but I want to see it in better condition. Is there anywhere I could call besides the store management that could help remedy the problem?
And, also, they have these tiny little green birds there that they call pocket parrots. They are the cutest little devils, but is that their real name? Last edited by Fanfare; 01-07-2005 at 07:44 PM. |

I think that pocket parrots are parrotlets. As for inspectors, may I suggest this:
I made up a checklist that I leave in a petstore anytime I visit. It basically says that I stopped in their store, and observed the following conditions: Date and time: ______________ Birds in overcrowded conditions? yes_____ No_____ Clean water in cages? Yes ______ No _____ Toys provided? Yes____ No _____ Temperature correct? Yes ____ No ______ Sales clerk available to answer questions? Yes ____ No _____ Books and care information available? Yes ____ No _____ Did the livestock appear in good health? Yes ____ No _____ I would shop in your store again. Yes ____ No _____ Would I recommend your store to my friends? Yes ____ No ______ For further questions, please contact me at Phone: _______________ Thanks for your time. ___________________ Name

Be my guest. By the way, as a result of my doing exactly that, I was contacted by the manager of our local Petsmart years ago. She thought it was a good idea and actually sent it off to corporate headquarters. When she took over the store's management, she was determined to improve the quality of the livestock in the store. To this day, she and I are friends. I KNOW that it can make a difference. You get more flies with sugar than with vinegar, after all. Getting huffy only makes it harder on the pets once you leave.
