Lost a bird today....dont know why. Advice??

We brought home a Peachface love this weekend (Sunday) and was on a fast track with finger training and was already perching calmly on hands and fingers. He was about 5-6 months from what the breeder stated and had no signs of sickness or loss of plumage. His siblings were quite healthy and active as was he, but he was very mild mannered and calm but active.
He looks to have just molt, but may have been about a week ago. We had been keeping his cage covered to help calm him get him used to my 2 girls. He was quite active until this morning when my wife found him on his belly with loss of control of his head and wings. Questioning m y daughter she might have given him an apple jack because "he wanted to eat" . Would there be anything in the cereal that he is allergic to? He didnt get more than one. Any disease? Could he have been poisoned by anything? He had nibbled on some newspaper but I dont know when exactly, and it didnt look eaten.
When my wife left this morning he was chirping and fine....2 hrs later he was on his belly. One hour after that he was gone. Towards the end he seemed to be coming around but didnt pull through.

Any response would be great and thanks in advance.

-Upset family

best thing to do is a necropsy to know for sure. because you have other birds, you need to know if it is a disease or not. I would also contact the breeder or where ever you got him to let them know and ask questions.
Cereal would not do that.
I am sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. No, I don't think an apple jack would do any harm. Check back with the breeder. Do you have other birds? If so, you may want to check with your vet as well.

I have been on a long hiatus from birding after the loss of my 5yr cockateil so no other birds now. I am a little discouraged now but want to know what happened. Could newspaper be the culprit or I hear that they can have stroke from anxiety. This never happped with my previous avi. We are quite upset but this is the first loss for our 3 yr old daughter. Thanks for the replies.

I doubt it would be from newspaper. I would certainly go back to the breeder, but sometimes babies just don't make it. Please don't blame yourselves or give up on birds. Maybe consider rehoming a bird that needs a big hearted family?

I've never encountered it before, but can you kill a bird with stress? To much to fast? He seemed very well behaved for such a bird. I didnt think 6 mo. was that young....but in the scheme of things...it is.

Were you aware of all the common household things that kill birds? Scented candles, fumes from teflon pans, aerosol sprays etc? Those will kill quickly.
