Cage Bedding Material

With 3 birds (GC, SC and Sen), we are slowly going broke using aspen pellets for cage liners. What does everyone use that is inexpensive, safe for the birds and keeps things clean etc?

Compost? I could do that too!! Do I need to tear it up or can I just throw it in?

I work in animal education and for our bird exhibits we've used pine shavings, "keepers choice" which is actually a reptile litter, (Its like extra mini woodchips) I've also used a mix of mulch and pine shavings and even newspaper. Just my input. The Birds we have are all different, Macaws, Amazons, Conures, soft bills and even Birds of Prey. So, i think you will be safe with a lot of stuff.

When I first got my budgie he was my first bird and I knew nothing and got all my information from the petstore where I bought him and they told me newspaper was bad to use and I shouldn't use it so I bought the kaytee wood pellets and it was fine for the whole first bag but when I got the second bag Neo started sneezing all the time and I took him to the vet and the vet showed me the pellets and said that's why he's sneezing there subject to mold and also people who use it don't change it everyday. I know use newspaper or printer paper and it works great.

I use newsprint, sans ink. I cant stand newspaper, especially when they use it to make soup with, then drink it. Frightens me.

I sometimes use newspaper if it's handy. My favorite is~I buy "end rolls" at our local newspaper. This is the unprinted paper in roll form that will go on the printing presses. When the roll is down far enough it can't be used on the press anymore and they sell them. I can get a really big one for 10-20 dollars and it lasts for months! (I have five large cages) I got a cutter from Uline to make life even easier. Check it out! :icon_mrgr
