Hi I am a new bird owner

Can someone please help me...My poor bird is so scared and I am scared that I am not a very good owner...i have done everything pretty the book and the people at the pet store said and she is still really sketchy and i am really nervous about it...i have been thinking about getting another budgie to keep her company because the people at the pet store said that she might not tame because she is over a year old...i wish i got info about them before i bought her...man am I a bonehead...but can someone give me some advice as to what gender of bird i should get for my bird right now...or if it's even a good idea...and what are some ideas as to what i can do to tame her...and maybe even something to tame me because i am just as nervous as my bird...hehe

If you post good pictures, Josie may be able to tell you the sex of your current bird. I'm no budgie expert, but another budgie may be a good idea. You're not a bad bird mommy, just an inexperienced one, which we were all at one point. You made a good choice by joining here....we're here for you!

male budgies have blue colour on the top of the beak and the females are pink to a white colour. Budgies i think aren't very cuddling i owned 2 that weren't friendly i tryed to tame them which they would sit on my finger for a few minutes then take off. but thats just me i'm not very fond of budgies and cockatiels i love the conures the most.

hi hendersongirl
As stated a scared birdie does not make you a bad birdie mom, I have been involved with birds for many years, and is why I got into the bird toy and cage business, mostly pet stores do not have a "bird" person taking care of and socializing the babies, so they do not know how to interact with people, just keep talking to her and offering treats, see if you can slowly get her to step up, don't force yourself on her, patience is a virtue, it once took me 6 months to get a Quaker to NOT draw blood, now she is the sweetest thing and always thanks you for her treat. Get to know her, and spend much time with her, the only thing with getting another bird is they may become friends and avoid you

Good evening, has anyone helped with your questions? I'd be willing to share my two cents however I'm a two thumbed typist & choose not to blister them if needn't be. Mike in IN.

Wow.... petstores, eh??? They're crappy... atleast most of them are, as MANY have no clue about birds in the first place! Many people think that it would be an easy and fun way to make money by working at a petstore but they hardly know about ALL the animals in the store in the first place, especially the birds! You are usually better off going to a breeder for birds and information who has been in the business for years, and sometimes even breeders can be wrong though they usually know more than the stores!

I have a conure whom I've tamed (though she is still a hands off bird). She was guessed to be around 6 or so years old when I received her, so really for all I know, she might be older than myself. It took me a few years to tame her to where she is now, though she is not what she use to be like!

If you work hard, know what foods to feed (as in fresh foods), how to properly care for, and all the good things a parront should do for your fids, then I'm sure that in time she can change around! As the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day! Some birds may instantly calm down while others take a few weeks, months, or even years before taming down.
