Please Help W/my U2!!

Hi Everyone,

I need some serious help and suggestions please!
My U2 who is only 11 mths, seems to me to be VERY thin. When I feel his chest, all I can feel is his chest bone sticking out...it's rather prominent. Also, I've tried feeding him cooked pastas and vegies, fresh fruits and vegies, but he won't eat them...all he seems to pick out are the sunflower seeds! How do I get him to eat vegies, fruits, pastas etc?! Also, his breath smells pretty bad and I'm assuming that is due to a poor diet. Am I right? Please help!!
Candice

Candice, please get him to an Avian Vet ASAP. What I am hearing sounds very bad and he may be in serious trouble. Ya got to go first thing in the morning when they open. He may have a yeast infection etc. or worse......He probably needs intravenous meds quickly and needs to be re-hydrated properly (don't put any fluids down his throat or in his beak unless ya know what ya are doing).....Best of luck and please don't delay....... :eusa_pray

I also agree. You have a VERY sick bird. Go AT ONCE and don't take no for an answer.

Candice,
I see you're located in Charlotte. Take him to Carolina Veterinary Specialists NOW. They operate as an emergency clinic on the weekends and after hours and even though an avian vet may not be onsite, they are on call. The clinic is located at 2225 Township Road, which is off of S. Tryon St. (Hwy 49) just north of Westinghouse Blvd. Call them and let them know you're coming so that they can arrange the appropriate resources. The number is 704-588-7015.

Please keep us posted. Best of luck.

David

Yes Candice, I would get him to the vet ASAP! After that, once he's better I'll tell you what I did with my U2 to get him to eat other things besides just almonds! Good luck. Let us know.

I am glad you are taking your U2 to the vet. He will be able to get you on track to a better diet for your U2. I have a U2 also named Tyler and I always had trouble keeping weight on her when she was young. She weighed between 490-500 grams and that is quite small for a U2. What I did was keep a scale on hand and weigh her every other day to keep track of her weight. I also gave her warm goodies at night for snack , Oatmeal, sometimes mashed potatoes, a small cup of baby bird formula. I made her birdie bread out of cornbread mix with sweet potatoe baby food and Oj mixed into it. Plus she loves lafaber nutrinuts. Now Tyler is five and just starting to fill out. She is now 550 grams and you can actually feel the weight on her. I think her hitting sexual maturity has made a diffrence. On top of that she bit me for the first time in her life the other day. That to I contribute towards sexual maturity.
Lynda

hello candice,
sounds like a candida yeast infection to me.
you need to get the bird to an avian vet asap.
this problem can be treated and cleared up in about 5 to 10 days.
hope this helps,
mick

Candice, please let us know how it turns out!
Lynda, my female U2 is quite small; weighs in at 430-450. Her previous owner told me she is fine, just a small little girl; she weighed her each and every day and after looking at her records I guess she is just a small little girl. I give everyone a warm, mushy meal at night just before bedtime so their tummies are full! I no sooner walk in the door at night and they are after me to eat!
