Incubator

I got the bird food for my baby lovrbirds. and now I'm trying to find an incubator. I had no idea there were so many different types..Water jackets CO2 tanks. I'm feeling a little over whelmed. What would you recomend for baby lovebirds? If you take the wire out of the bottom whould the type that you hatch chicken eggs work. How important is an accurate temp? Thanks Jo

Hi Jo,

In addition to blue quakers, we also breed blue masked lovebirds. We use two types of brooders, one is home made and the other is a Brinsea TLC-4. The homemade one is a plastic reptile tank. Put a heating pad under it on the outside set on the lowest temperature. Make sure the heating pad only covers about 2/3 of the tank so that the babies can move away from the heat source if they want. Put a piece of dry deck in the bottom or put pine shavings with a piece of white paper towel on top. I keep the temp at 85 degrees F and humidity at 50%. Petsmart sells a combo thermometer/humidity measure that is very inexpensive that you can stick on the inside wall. Put the top on the tank and cover with a bath towel. This will work fine. We use the Brinsea for transporting as it can plug in the car and go with us in our camper and other trips.

Temperature is critical as is humidity. So please keep those babies warm and hydrated.

Best regards,

Quakermaker

Humidity

I place wet paper towel or washcloth inside a container and set it inside the brooder to add humidity. It needs to be replaced with clean ones everyday as bacteria can develop on them.
