Male hurting baby!!!!!!

My cockitiels had 6 eggs and one hatched on 1-1-05. All the rest didn't make it. I came home from work yesterday and the male bird(buddy) had a little blood on his beak, so I checked the female(Nicky) and the the baby. The babies wings were all dried blood. We took the male out last night and put him in another cage. He was really upset. This morning my husband was holding the baby and both birds feed the baby in his hand. Buddy helps out alot with the baby. Another problem is Nicky laid another 2 eggs before we could get the nesting box out so, she has double duty now. Should we keep the male away or WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE DO!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't fiquare out how to reply so I will answer your questions here. When we looked at the eggs they were liquid. When we candled at 5 days we thought they were fertile. Don't know why they didn't make it. The baby was in the nesting box when the male did this. I can't tell you if the female was in there because I was at work. I talked to the pet store owner and he said as long as the female is feeding not to start hand feeding the baby. We are willing to hand feed and we are ready. The pet store owner said we should take the male out til the baby is older. We will but they both scream all day long to be together but I can't let the male kill the baby. The birds are inside. We live in snow country.

Is their cage inside or outside?......Especially if outside, check for mites also, even though chances are somewhat slim that is the reason for the picking.........Was the baby in the box with Momma & the new eggs or outside of the box? I'm also curious as to why didn't the other eggs "make it"? Not fertile? Did ya break them open before discarding?......Are ya fully prepared to handfeed in case the parents stop feeding altogether or continue to hurt the baby? If not, please immediately make a contact for someone experienced to help you out if necessary....If the baby was inside the box still, with the new eggs, I would try leaving in the original cage first but take him out of the nestbox. If papa still picks on him then I may try putting the baby in the other cage with papa to see if he will feed there but really best IMO to just start the handfeeding process if ya know how or you could also sell to a bird pet shop and let them take over. You can then properly prepare yourself for the next round if ya want to be a breeder...... ....Btw, welcome to the board Sue. :icon_smil

i had this too. SEVERAL times with the same father.......I removed the male and the babies were fine.....Some guys arent cut out for parronthood**LOL** :aiwebs_01
mom did all the feeding...and sat on another clutch!
Mom and DAd will EVENTUALLY stop screaming....
if you keep the dad in there you will end up with a dead chick.
