I don't have parakeets, but I have 1 cockatiel who eats a seed mix and Zupreem as well as fruits and veggies and pasta.

I don't feed pellets, however, I do feed seeds to my parakeets (bourkes and 2 budgies) which may or may not be the same seeds as what my cockatiel and conure get.

They all eat bread, different types of lettuce, oranges, apples, carrots, scrambled/boiled eggs, etc. Birds need to eat a mix of different foods (besides seed and/or pellets alone) to stay healthier, hopefully be able to stay away from illnesses, and may even live a longer life, two or more times as long than that of a bird that doesn't get fresh foods.

I've got all my seeds in a cat litter container as well. Cleaned it out before use, and let it dry out so the smell would go away. Keeps the seeds fresh, and from moths getting into the seeds (I've got a moth problem in my room...).

We are basically saying that neighther are better... Seeds alone causes obese birds who are malnurished. Pellets alone cause birds who may have too much calcium and nutrition in them... If you feed a diet with fruits and veggies and other fresh foods daily, then it doesn't matter if you feed seeds and pellets as well. You can feed seeds OR pellets with the fresh foods, or you can feed seeds AND pellets with fresh foods...

Pellets are supposed to be better for your birds, as they contain lots of vitamins and things that birds need. However, it is also recommended to give a little seed, and fresh foods. :)

I feed both, the seed mix I have has dried fruit and veggies in it too. I think its a preference, but a good seed mix can usually has some form of pellets in it. I think it's better to give both, as an all seed diet isn't very healthy.

My Katie even eats the big bird food, it's funny to watch her holding a big piece of dried fruit or a Zupreem pellet the size of her whole face....
