Unhappy Female Lovie killed mate?

I came across this on another board and wondered if anyone has an idea for this lovie owner.

....................After being together for 7 years, my female lovebird somehow attacked and decapitated the male, when I found them the next day the female was standing on top of the male like a prize! Is this a normal occurrence or is this a rare case? Another question that I have is what should I do with the female? should I punish her somehow like put her in another room in a smaller cage, or should i just get rid of her all together, I’ve heard of lovebirds killing each other but I think this goes far beyond just killing!! Any Info would be great, Thanks in advance.

Unhappy You poor thing...

That must have been horrible for you...

Sounds pretty rare, definitely, but animals don't stay around corpses as "prizes"... It was probably because she was used to being around him.

You're right that the decapitation sounds extreme, especially after seven years of them being together... Are you sure there aren't any other possible causes of death?

Were there feathers plucked?

Don't punish pets... Assert dominance and/or condition out of bad behaviour if it's necessary, but don't punish...

If you don't think you'd be happy getting her a friend or looking after her solo, see if you can find a bird expert or such for her to go, but try to forgive her...

I'm sure, however horrible the things she's done, she's still your pet and one you love regardless (I had a female gerbil who killed off most of her siblings along with some of my favourite gerbils before I learnt that her doing it was a possibility, so I know the feeling)...

I don't think anyone will blame you if you give her away, but I think you'll feel better if you forgive her first...
