Fireplaces-Can they be used with birds?

Several years ago when I owned just one little Hahns Macaw I lit a Dura Flame log in the fireplace and ignorantly sat with my bird on my shoulder and read and watched the fire. A few days later my Hahns became very ill. But for a wonderful avian vet I believe I would have lost her. Dura Flame logs and birds DO NOT MIX!
I have heard that it may be safe to burn citrus wood such as orange wood in a fireplace but I have been afraid to try it. Does anyone know if there is a safe wood to burn in the fireplace with birds in the house?

You can do a search on "fireplace" and see several threads on the subject. Basically, opinions are all over the place. I do use my prefabricated fireplace (I burn oak) and have not had any problems with my B&G. I am very careful to avoid any downdrafts when starting the fire and always keep the screen pulled so there's no access to the flames for any of the fur/feather babies. I use the manufactured logs to start my fires but make sure I have a good draft before lighting.

Hope this helps.
